Counting Calories and Cooking Help!!

Anyone know how to figure how many calories you are consuming when you cook a meal?  I use to do weight watchers but when I did that I usually ate pre-packaged meals (such as frozen dinners and such) and so it was easy to count my points.  Well now I would like to start weight watchers again (without having to actually pay for it :/) or at least count my calories. But I don't know how to do this with cooking! Most recipes I use do not tell me how many servings it will make or any nutritional information.

Re: Counting Calories and Cooking Help!!

  • Try creating a myfitness account. You can easily track your calories and there's even a section for recipes. I use it quite frequently, since I make a lot of stuff from scratch, I just go in an add whatever I used for that dinner or whatever meal I made and then it calculates the calories for me.

    Good luck!

  • Sparkpeople also has a similar set up to myfitnesspal. You can enter the recipe and servings and it calculates the calories for you. That is what I used when counting calories to lose weight (and still occasionally use it), but I've also heard VERY good things about myfitnesspal.

Ditto. Myfitnesspal has a recipe feature. I live by it. I lost 40 lbs with the help of myfitnesspal! I still actively use it even though I'm no longer trying to lose.

  • on the WW online there's a place for you to input your recipies and it will tell you the points per serving.

  • My Fitness Pal is awesome because you can build your own recipes in there and it will give you total calories. Also, there are websites that you can enter ingredients and it will break out your nutrition facts on what you made. Based on the quantity you make, you should be able to create however many servings you want from the meal and then use that to determine cals/serving. (ex. I made chicken enchiladas, we will say there were 8 enchiladas total, total calories of the whole dish were 1200; thats 150/enchilada).

  • Try www.fatsecret.com. It helped me lose 35 pounds and it has a great smartphone app!
