Roseanne Barr dishes on why she's running for president

Posted by

CNN Political Unit

(CNN) ? Actress and comedian Roseanne Barr, who's running for president as the nominee for the Peace and Freedom Party, said Thursday she's making a White House bid in order to push "socialist solutions."

"I was asked to carry the water and carry a message during this election and to make socialist solutions part of the narrative, because they're being left out and they work," she said on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight."

Barr won the nomination last week at the party's convention in Los Angeles, along with her running mate Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a soldier killed in Iraq and anti-war activist best known for her protest outside of then-President George W. Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas.

Barr had originally sought the Green Party presidential nomination, a bid she announced last year on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," but lost that contest last month to Dr. Jill Stein.

The former "Roseanne" star said Thursday she's tired of what she called the "two-headed beast," referring to the America political system's two main parties: the Republican Party and the Democratic Party.

"All they do is use 'extractionism' as their strategy, they blame each other for the fact that neither one of them has any real solutions," Barr said. "They know they don't have to because they got it all sewn up."

But the White House hopeful reserved her strongest criticism for the nation's wealthy, particularly those who work on Wall Street, and the amount of money spent on political campaigns.

"Government should not be run as a business," she said. "Government is the thing that protects people from fat cats, monopolists and crazy international bankers that write off human life."

  • I really like her viewpoints, actually.  I've been following her blog for quite some time.

  • I'm not familiar with her platform, but at least it's one more choice, right? I honestly still don't know who I'm voting for. I generally identify more with the Republicans than the Democrats, but Mitt just seems reminiscent of the guy who fired your dad, if YKWIM. I'm stil unclear on what his political stances are, and it seems the only people talking about what Mitt stands for are his opponents. (not a good position for him to be in). The few snippets of him actually speaking that I have seen, it crossed my mind that maybe he was an alien, merely disguised as a human; he came off as that unrelateable.

I know the economy is supposedly in the tank, but I think it's actually benefitted my family. We just signed a purchase agreement for a brand new home (our first house), which we're getting a super low interest rate on. I don't think we could have afforded it if the market was higher. DH and I both have high-paying government jobs, and the pension reform our Governor is proposing theoretically doesn't effect us. And we had our first child this year. So, while the media and politicians are telling me that we're in a Great Recession, the American Dream is gone, etc, I actually feel like I've never been happier or my life more prosperous....under Obama...

I work for a small business, and it's grown exponentially over the past four years. And we're not in a necessary industry at all. Both the owners are voting Obama.

Gov. Romney would be great for corporations. They won't lose their tax breaks with him. Huge businesses. But since most small business owners are middle class, I don't see how he's helping them.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.

Exactly.  If you own Wells Fargo, GE or the like, then definitely vote for Romney.  But, none of us do.  Like pp said, most small business owners are middle-class and would be shooting themselves in the foot with a vote for Romney.

I own my own business. I want Obama in. I don't want someone who only cares about huge corporations and who wants to destroy the Small Business Administration i.e. Romney.

Unless you are making huge profits with your business, your federal tax burden is pretty low. And for the majority of industries, there are virtually no federal regulations on your business. There aren't on mine.

we own our own businesses in areas that people have cut back on because of the economy.  No I don't own a HUGE corporation, but I honestly don't know how any small business owner could vote obama back in.  Our business were better under Bush and will be better under Romney.

  • The idea that Obama has been good for small business owners is just not true where I live.

It just sounds like a sound bite given out by the liberals. So many small businesses around here haven't even survived Obama.

It's definitely not a soundbite.  Believe me, I'm an accountant, and have been for 11 years.  Things have been much better under Obama.

same here as well.  it's sad.  I know when I got laid off from my last job in commercial insurance it was because of the economy, big shock.  They stopped replacing people as well.  That's when I decided to have my own business.  I was so sick of getting laid off from jobs.

sure.  I teach violin/viola lessons to many ages:  3-70s and I have a trio that plays weddings/events.  since starting that trio it has since become a solo, duet, and quartet as well.  I found that if I offered that many options there would be more flexibility to making money.

  • which is why I believe my and my husbands business would do better under romney or anyone else for that matter  (romney was not my first pic for a republican candidate) .  music is the first to go in the schools, it's also the first to go when parents get laid off.  they can't afford lessons for their kids.  regarding weddings,  people have cut back SO much. my husband has not had nearly the wedding bookings he use to have.  although he has kind of gotten out of it because of that.  he wasn't willing to cut back his prices so much just to book them, he has since gotten way more into commercial photography.

BUT it's what I love, I feel it gives a purpose to my life and it never gets old.

so while you guys think that obama has helped small businesses SO much.  He hasn't helped them all.

You do realize, though, that Romney would cut back programs in schools much more than Obama, right?  Specifically, PE, art and music.  In fact, I'm currently taking a course (I'm in school to get my teaching certificate) on the politics of public education and this is one thing we're looking at specifically.  The funding for public schools will be much worse under Romney than we're seeing under Obama.

While people can't afford lessons for their children, it's not really an issue about who's in office, but moreso the recession.  As for school funding, if you think that your business gets more customers when schools cut funding for activities, then it's probably best you vote for Romney.  But if you pay yourself less than $200k  from your business and agree that music should be funded in schools, your vote is better off with Obama.  Logically speaking, that is.

I agree that music is the first to go in education cuts. So when Romney cuts education, what do you think will be the first to go?

Also, one president can't be everything to all people. I don't think anyone will argue that Obama has helped every small business in America. It is important to recognize that Romney will not either. I am upper middle class and what I think Romney is proposing in taxes, etc. (I'm not really sure because it will take to long for him to tell me) would eliminate my ability to do extras for my children like music lessons. I would think upper middle class people are your primary market.  If I am lossing my deductions, that money has to come from somewhere  and music lessons is an easy cut as opposed to moving to a new house, buying a cheaper car, etc.

  • The small business I work for is just as necessary as violin/viola lessons. It's really, really similar even. So it's not necessary at all. And yet, our business has grown under this president and has expanded more in the last four years than the previous 7. Both owners are voting for POTUS, as am I.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • Roseanne announced she was running for the Green Party nomination way back at the beginning of the year.

She did not get the nomination - Jill Stein did, and I will likely be voting for her.

But hey, if Roseanne can bring more attention to third parties, awesome for her.
