BC Options - Will be TTC in a year

Hi everyone, I am new to the nest. Recently married in July (yay!). We have decided to TTC next summer but I want to change/go off the pill now to see if that is what has been causing my low sex drive for some time now. We hate condoms but will use them if that is the only option but I wanted to see everyone's opinions on alternative methods. I just want to make sure that we stay safe for the next 10 months so we have time to save and prepare.

I am a little undereducated in this department since I have been on the same bc pill for 9 years. Anything I take I will want to stop taking/using in time to be ready to conceive next summer. Thoughts?

Re: BC Options - Will be TTC in a year

  • Hi!

My husband and I use a little pill called encare that you can get pretty much anywhere and it is pretty inexpensive(like $7 for a box) It has about 12 pills in it. It acts almost like a barrier and has spermicide.

We have been using it for a year now and haven't had any problems with it.

    Hope this helps:)

  • If you're tying to get your sex drive back, pretty much anything hormonal is a "no"- which doesn't leave you many options besides condoms.

There is a copper IUD- but if you are only going to use it for 10 months it is probably not worth the cost- plus they can cause terrible periods which will probably negatively affect your sex drive.

I'm on the shot- it's just progesterone (no estrogen) so it's side-affects are supposed to be decreased. But once you stop the shot, it could take months to become fertile again- so that won't work if you want to TTC soon. There is also a progesterone IUD but the cost issue then comes back into play.

I don't know much about nuvaring- it's still hormones so I'm not sure you want to do that but it may be worth asking your doctor about?

  • BC options that dont include any hormones. Condoms are your best bet

  • Thanks for asking this question as I had the same one!  Have been on the nuvaring for about 7 years now and the pill for several years before that.  I could really take or leave sex, although certainly enjoy it once DH gets me in the mood.  We're thinking of TTC next fall.
  • There's always Taking Charge of your Fertility.  Even if you decide not to go the natural way, it's insanely informative about your body, charting to avoid pregnancy and charting to get pregnant.
  • I second the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility.  I am currently on 2nd cycle sans hormonal birth control and I am feeling great.  Seems like my sex drive is coming back.  The only down side is I forgot that cramps kinda suck but nothing IBprofen cant hack.  The book is the key to being safe as far as avoiding conception as it explains everything to look for and the safe rules to follow. I highly recomend it.
