Custom-Looking on a Budget

I just moved into my first home - a condo. It is new construction and everything looks very generic.  I really put most of my money into purchasing this place. I have a nice amount of savings, but don't want to dip into that too much in case of an emergency. Does anyone have any tips for making our condo look less generic on a budget. I've painted and changed some of the light fixtures. I've also purchased some art and craft things from etsy. It still doesn't look much different to me, so any help is appreciated!

Thanks!!

  • My initial reaction was paint & light fixturs but it sounds like you've already done that.

What about window coverings?  You could get some nice curtains and accent pillows to decorate the room....

  • Do you have pictures of rooms you want to change up?  I also agree curtains make a huge difference.
  • i think wainscoting can immediately give a space so much character. post photos of your space..that will help us help you :)

  • I like your paint choices and I'm in LOVE with your yellow shower curtain. My one suggestion would be to rearrange the art on your walls. Right now, they are all too spread out to have any effect. I suggest that you group a few pieces to make more of a focal point in each room.
  • Thanks for the advice

  • I think area rugs and window treatments would help give the place some warmth and more personality. It is a beautiful home, but looks a little sterile. I think over time it will develop more. Maybe toss a few throw pillows or blankets here and there. I think you need more mix and match and accessories. For instance, the master bedroom is rather bland because it looks like a complete bedroom set- everything is the same wood tone. It does not look intriguing and collected over time. Sometimes the "hominess" just develops over time though. If you are in too much of a rush to have it look perfect and buy everything at once, you will not end up with pieces you genuinely love. Maybe break up the bedroom set by getting an interesting dresser (painted a funky color or mirrored or metallic etc.) and move one of the matching pieces elsewhere in the home. All in all I think you are off to a great start, and I am sure your home will develop over time. Just have fun and not everything has to look magazine ready off the get-go!
