I'm such an idiot

We were OOT last weekend and I didn't get my laundry done.  Yesterday  I threw on a regular bra instead of a nursing bra, and just lifted it up when I needed to pump.  Last night I was rewarded with mastitis.  I'd heard the horror stories, but I had no idea it could be this bad.

Re: I'm such an idiot

  • Wow! I have worn regular bras both times I've nursed and never had a problem. I've had mastisis, but not related to that. That sucks! Hopefully it'll go away soon. The one time I had it wasn't too bad, but the first time I seriously don't remember ever being so sick.
  • I've never heard of being able to get mastitis from wearing a regaulr bra (versus nursing). I'm not sure how the two would affect the each other, to be quite honest?

I had mastitis the day after I got home from the hospital with Conall - but I know that's because he latched better on one side than the other, and I never thought to pump the side he barely fed from for those 3 days. The night of day 3, I had chills and a fever; the morning of day 4, my one side was all red, swollen, warm to the touch, and sore.

Is it possible that you weren't relieving enough?

Either way, it sucks and I'm sorry. Feel better!

  • I think underwire can cause a blocked duct, which can lead to mastitis if it's restricting milk flow. At least that's my understanding, but I could be wrong.

Yes, this is what I've heard/read.

Yes, this is what I've heard/read.

It is from the underwire.  Instead of unhooking it I was just pulling it up over my breast and the mass/redness is just above where the underwire hit.
