How often for weights?

H and I have started to really get back into healthy habits ( and weight for me!). We signed up at the local gym and have been going 5-6 days a week. I know that lifting weights and cardio is a must for weight loss but I am unsure of how often I should be lifting? I attend a 75min class 2x a week that works on every muscle group (circuit style) and in the off days some type of cardio whether it be a Zumba class, tennis, treadmill..etc. Should I be lifting more?
Sorry that most of my jokes are borderline inappropriate. And by sorry, I mean you're welcome. Cait_S

Re: How often for weights?

  • Generally speaking you want to make sure you have a "day of rest" after lifting (i.e. cardio is fine but not lifting), if you wanted to up it to 3 days when you do 6 workouts in a week thats fine but what you are doing, coupled with a healthy diet should be sufficient to see results. If you are looking for more specific results (i.e. more definition in arms, better cardio health, etc.) you may want to consult a trainer but it sounds like you are on the right track!

     Good Luck!

  • Great job getting back into healthy habits!  I started my journey in mid-January, and have lost some pounds and more inches.

I do 3 days of lifting a week, in circuits.  On those days, I do 20-30 minutes cardio warmup.  I then go through circuits of toe taps (jumping to put one toe, then the other, onto a step), an arm exercise, a leg exercise, and an ab exercise.  I get 3-5 circuits finished in one workout, depending on how much time I have before I need to shower and get to work.  This has really helped me get muscle definition in my arms and legs, and my waist has shrunk substantially.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks Ladies! I think i'll add one more day of weights on the weekend :)
