Hives were there & now they're gone

Eamon's teacher called about an hour ago & said after lunch Eamon got a bunch of hives on his face, nowhere else.  Said he was still acting ok so I said to watch him and then call back after nap.  Well she called about 10 mins ago & said they are gone!  No idea where he would get them, his lunch was pretty much the same thing he had for dinner last night.  She did say that he was sitting at the table with someone eating pb&j but that he didn't touch it at all (John & Caileigh have nut alllergies)

Anyone experience this with their kids& hives?  Or heard of having a reaction to peanut butter without touching it?

Re: Hives were there & now they're gone

  • eleni used to get hives on her that would just pop up like that. Usually when she ate dairy and it got on her face (which is why we waited on the whole milk transition) and if Mo licks her (which he does excessively) she still gets a little pink but not so much an issue with the hives anymore.

SO... I guess if someone else was eating something and still had traces of it on their hands and touched Eamon it could trigger a reaction. Or if he was messier today at school than he was at home last night it could explain the hives too.

And there are a lot of people who are highly sensitive to peanuts. And don't have to touch it at all to be affected by it.  Thankfully Eleni doesn't fall into that zone, but I have heard of it being a problem, which is why so many schools just feel better about going nut free.

  • Oh, and one more thing. Usually EJs went away after her skin had been washed.
  • Thanks Amanda!  I'm hoping he doesn't fall into that highly allergic to peanuts category.  He has had hives in the past that have come & gone (dog licking, grass, etc..) so I have a feeling he will not escape the allergic side of the family

  • Gavin used to get that around his lips/mouth after eating ranch dressing. He's grown out of whatever it is that caused the reaction, though.

I hope Eamon doesn't have any more problems!

  • Sometimes I get stress hives that appear when I am stressed and then go away very quickly.  Maybe it isn't a food reaction?
