How to stop cat from jumping onto counter?
I've been having issues keeping the cat off the counter. She constantly jumps up there, especially when we're preparing food, presumably hopping to get a little taste. I usually just take her down and plop her on the floor. We've tried the "clapping loud" technique but she was unfazed. She's already burned her paw once by walking across the hot stove (this was recent), we were hoping that's what she needed to keep off the counters, but nope, she's right back up there again. What should I do to keep her off?
Re: How to stop cat from jumping onto counter?
Is there an alternate place for her to hop up on? Like a cat tree or shelves or something? I'd say when she wants to be on the counter, redirect her to an appropriate place for her to be up high in.
Another option you can do is to put aluminum foil down (see if the sound/feel deters her) or you could look at pet stores for like a sticky mat (I've seen this on a tv show, probably on animal planet) to deter her from being on the counter.
HTH!
We were able to use aluminum foil to keep ours off the counters. We only had to have it up there for a couple months before the "got it" and stopped trying. I mean, I guess I don't really know what they do when we're gone, but I'm pretty confident they stay down.
It also helped when we added a cat tree, so they had some other place to climb.
I've heard double sided tape can work, since they don't like it sticking to their paws.
Thanks everyone, I think I'll try the aluminum foil trick and see how she responds to it.
Right now our apartment is too small for a cat tree but I'll look into getting one once we move.
We had to use a spray bottle with water in it and compromise and she is allowed on the bathroom counter
