An update post on 10 month old pup

I posted a few times about the many issues we have had with our 10 month old Pitt mix, the most important being his sudden resource agression. Just wanted to post an update to those of you who were extremely helpful, especially greywolf!

We started behavioral training before the board and train, like someone recommeded. The behavioral trainer came to our house and worked with us and both dogs. She uses the Pryor methods of training, especially clicker training and we love her! Already there has been a huge improvement in the dynamics. What it boiled down to was we were doing several things very wrong. Our pup was asserting himself as alpha, our older dog had already accepted it and we were making matters worse by not accepting his new alpha positions. With a few minor changes like feeding him first, giving him attention first, the aggression he was displaying has disappeared. We were also letting him sleep in our bed which she explained led him to believe he was higher on the heirachy than our kids. Oh and the clicker training is going awesome!

We have decided board and train is no longer necessary and instead are starting zone classes next week with our trainer for obedience. So again thanks to everyone that had wonderful advice!

Whoops got your name wrong in my post! I wanted to thank you! When I originally posted on TB you are the only one who offered an alternative to rehoming him!

  • I am kind of agahst at the philosophy to accept his alpha status. especially over the kids. I feel like if one of them has a nighmare and come into bed with you he is going to get agressive towards them. Don't get me wrong I am glad its working I am just surprised and maybe a little doubtful that it will work ling term.

I wasn't clear in my post, I'm sorry! We are not accepting alpha over the kids just with our 4 year old dog. We are doing things so that he knows the kids are over him. They feed him and give him treats now, with supervision of course, and they are involved in his training. And he also no longer sleeps in our bed, instead he is in his crate at night. Thank you for your input!

  • oh gosh I am glad. I went back and reread and realized I miss read the part about sleeping in the bed. sorry! That makes much more sense and makes me relieved :). I am really glad he is improving and finding his place in your home.

  • I'm really glad you're seeing improvement!  You all should be proud of yourselves for putting in the work...it is not easy, but so rewarding.  he is lucky to have you as his family.

  • I'm so happy things are going better with him. He still has a ton of puppy moments but he loves training and reacts so well to it !

A side note he is incredibly smart and we need to find some toys that challenge him more.  Any advice on puzzle type toys?
