Husband Has to Have a Fan When Sleeping

My husband has to have a fan blowing directly on him while he sleeps. However, I really don't like it, and I'm starting to get a sore throat because of it. Any suggestions on how to break his fan habit? Thanks!

Re: Husband Has to Have a Fan When Sleeping

  • We use one of those tall adjustable fans that sits on the floor and you can move around and I have it angled where it hits both of us, but maybe you could get one of these and put it at the end of the bed on his side so that it's aiming straight at him.
  • My H was the same way....first it was for the heat..so I told him he got to choose fan or window...and I wouldn't complain whichever he chose...(and like you I get really dry sore throats in the morning when the fan is on)

Then it became just that its easier to fall asleep with it on. Unconventional maybe, but I started wearing yoga pants and tanktops/hoodies and socks to bed...and told him I was cold (which is a half truth...I wouldn't freeze, but I do like being cozy), well he didnt like me wearing so many clothes so I told him he could turn the fan off or I'll add more clothes as the weather gets colder....

The fan is now turned off, and my sleep is better and our relationship (and sex life) is better. H usually sleeps with only the sheet or nothing on him because he still thinks its hot, but we are both happier because of it.

  • Same here. H turns the overhead fan on, as well as has the window open. At first he had it on medium-high speed, so I told him he could keep it on as long as it was on low speed because I get really bad sinus infections and sore throats from the fan when it's blowing the dust around at higher speeds. That sounds kinda silly typing that out, but it is what it is. I just add an extra blanket on my side, which I like doing anyway because the weight of the blankets is comforting. Also, I don't have to worry about him stealing the covers, which is a bonus. :)

  • My DH likes the fan on for noise too.  We actually put it in the window with the window closed.  It still creates the noise but because it can't suck in a lot of air it doesn't create a draft.

  • Such a PIA to be married. I don't miss it at all.

Good thing nobody was asking you or your failed marriage/life.  I suggest you find another message board to troll.  Perhaps www.whoresthatcantmakemarriagework.com might be your place instead

  • I have a hard time falling asleep without the tv on, I usually fall asleep before my DH, so he'll just shut it off when I'm asleep.  Can you try putting the fan on a timer?

They make fans that will run on a timer, we have one.  It's nice to cool the room down then it shuts off in 1-4 hours depending on how it's set.  That might fix your sore throat issue.

  • We have the fan at the foot of our bed (there's a chest there as well, so it sits on that) and blows on our feet.  Husband likes the white noise and I like the air circulation, although it does get a little cold.  But I throw on an extra blanket.

If you're having a hard time adjusting, maybe have him put it on 'his' side of the bed, or insist on it being on the lowest setting?

You're obviously not happy to be so defensive. FYI my ex started gambling excessively. I've been happily single now, no drama.

So happily single that you spend your time on internet message boards for newlyweds....yep sure. Keep telling yourself whatever you need to to keep being 'happy'.

  • I hate fans blowing on me - I find it really disturbs my sleep.

Identify what you don't like - noise or moving air.  Have your husband identify what he needs - noise or cooling air.  If he needs noise, can he get one of those noise machines or headphones.  If he needs the breeze, would he be willing to get one of those Dyson fans to give him a smoother air flow.

  • We have the exact opposite problem in my house. I can't sleep without the fan because I'm always boiling hot.  DH can't sleep with it because it apparently keeps him awake to have his beard/arm hairs etc moving in the breeze.  We've been arguing about this for 11 years.

I think PPs have already given good suggestions.  I have none.  We found that the problem went away when I took a job working overnights so now I can sleep alone with the fan on high :)

  • We have the opposite problem, too. I need a fan to sleep, but it messes with H's sinuses to have it blowing straight on him. For me, it's the sound and the cool air that I need.

I knew this was going to be a problem before we got married because we had already talked about it. So I started just turning the fan on, but not putting it directly on me before we got married. Now I'm used to it and it doesn't seem to bother H. Maybe this is something that your H could do, too?
