Birthday Lunch Buffet

WDYT about this menu?  It's a birthday party for my son (3 yrs) and we are having about 25 adults + 8 kids (kids are getting grilled hotdogs).  This is one idea I have come up with for a menu:

Grilled Skirt Steak (asian marinade) served on a platter with chimichurri sauce

 Asian Coleslaw

Potato Salad

Green or chopped salad

French Bread slices or homemade focaccia

Fruit Salad

Birthday Cake

Should I be worried about people having to cut their meat, even though it will be sliced on a platter?  Also, I would love to make the cake myself, so trying to keep the menu simple, yet still yummy, and easily put together. Would love to hear your thoughts! TIA!!

Re: Birthday Lunch Buffet

  • Cutting the steak could be an issue if you think people won't be at a table.  It sounds really good though.  Could you make it sort of an open face sandwich where you serve it on the bread and people can use their hands?

When is the party?  As it turns chilly I'm wondering if a warm potato dish would be better than the potato salad.  Otherwise I think it sounds great.

A tip on the cake:  You can bake ahead.  Grease and flour and line the bottom of your cake pan with parchment, fill and bake.  As soon as it comes out of the oven and you can handle it, put parchment on top, turn out the cake and cover in several (several) layers of plastic wrap.  Then put it straight into the freezer.  It may puff a little from the steam, but all of that moisture will get sucked back into the cake.  Promise it will still be moist, just thaw the day before.  If you want to carve a shape do it while the cake is still semi frozen.

thanks for your cake advice. That is what I will do - make it ahead of time and freeze. I do need to cut it and frost/fondant it, so that is so helpful!!

We live in miami, so it will be around 85 at the time of the party. In regards to the steak cutting issue, I'm thinking maybe kebobs will work better??  I can do some chicken and some beef?
