Special needs services in NNJ schools?

We are planning a move to NJ by the summer. There are a few towns we are considering, but schools will be our deciding factor. We have a son who will require services, although I don't know what exactly. We think he will get an Aspergers dx. Is there a way to learn about integrated preschools and elementary schools and transferring services from a different state?

Any moms here have opinions about what towns are better suited to kids with different needs?

We are looking at Madison, New Providence, Westfield, and Cranford, but are not tied to them if other towns might be better suited in that area.

Re: Special needs services in NNJ schools?

  • Just so you know, this board is really dead Sad

There is a Special Needs board on the Bump that has really knowledgeable moms on there, and they specifically know about NJ.

I used to work in SpEd so I do know a good amount about it in general, but I don't know much about those specific towns. I do know that Westfield is known for their great public school system, as well as special services.

If I were you, I would call those schools directly when your child receives his IEP. You could speak to a member of the Child Study Team or the Special Services Director and see what is offered.

  • Thanks for your thoughts. I think your suggestion about calling the schools is a great idea. I have been on the SN board, but hadn't considered posting there about NJ ... I will see what nfo i can get there.

    Thanks again!

  • I teach Pre K Special ED in Summit. We have one of the best special ed programs in the state.  We have a few different preschool classroom with varying accommodations for children with special needs.
