Pill Question...

Wasn't sure where to post this but...

I have been on Lo Loestrin Fe since December 2011. I got married 4 months ago and we were not sexually active before we were married. We had been using condoms along with me taking the pill up until a little over a week ago when we decided to not use the condoms anymore. For about the past 4 or 5 days I have been so exhausted (to the point where I have been taking a nap after work the past few days) and have been having cramps and lower back aches. I guess I just put it together this afternoon that we didn't use a condom for the first time and that I have not been feeling well.

I have been good about taking my pills...i have maybe sporadically missed 5 since i started last December. I never get my period during the white or brown pills in my pack when I technically should have it. I have been having very very light/spotting around the third week since I started Lo Loestrin Fe. It could be something else like a virus or something, but just wondering if anyone has experienced this and ended up pregnant on the pill or would have any input.

Thanks!

Re: Pill Question...

  • I take Loestrin too, and lately I have similar symptoms every few months instead of getting my period. I've been on the same pill for 2 years, and was very regular the whole time until last May. I wonder if they've changed something in the pill recently. Obviously, if your symptoms persist, take a pregnancy test, it's not like they're hugely expensive, and then you'll know. If it comes up negative, give it awhile, and if you're still feeling off, go to a doctor. For me, it turned out to just be stress and illness. Good luck!
  • YOu can get a pregnancy test at the dollar store for $1 and it is just like the ones the doctors use. It is very accurate. They have ovulation predictor tests as well. Good luck. There is really no need to use condoms if you are taking the pill correctly.
  • The only way you will know whether or not you are pg is to take a test. Honestly though, you wouldn't have "symptoms" this early anyway.

I'm not very anal about taking my pills at exactly the same time every day like some women (my gyn was awesome about explaining how the pill worked), but you can't skip pills.  Only sporadically missing five isn't being good!  It's actually pretty bad. If you want to reduce the risk of pregnancy, you can't skip ANY.

EDIT: I'm reading "miss pills" as "Oh, I forgot to take it that day.  Let's just skip it."  If that's not what happened and you followed what I wrote in the next paragraph, then I'm sorry.  You should be fine then.

If you miss a pill one day, you take the first one the minute you remember and the next one about twelve hours later.  If you miss two, then you can double up for two days.  After that, you need to stop the pills all together, get your period and start again.

If you are using the pill correctly, then it's okay to not use a condom.  If you miss pills (and rarely if you do take them all correctly), you could be pregnant.  Take a test.  It's as simple as that.  I will say that my husband and I don't use condoms and I am on the pill.  Ten years later and no babies for us (but I take all my pills).

Oh, and one more thing (sorry, sorry!) - I was on Loestrin Fe for a time.  The placebo pill time is really short.  I don't think it's that surprising that you don't get your period before starting a new pack.  The active pills will stop your period so if never starts and it's a short time anyway, the minute you start the next pack it'll just never happen.  Check with your doctor, but it might not be that concerning.
