PUppy housetraining help needed :(

Hi

I have a 11 week lab/sheppard cross. She is a beautiful dog and a love but  we can not get her housetrained.

We have had her for 3 weeks. I feed and water her on a schedule and start taking her out at the 10 minute mark after. Alot of times she will pee right away. Problem being she will pee about 8 times afterwards. We cant always get her to go outside or you will get her out and she will come right back in an pee on the floor. I dont see any signs from her either

I have a 10 week old son and a 20 month daughter and my husband is at his wits end over this peeing/pooping in the house. I need help

Re: PUppy housetraining help needed :(

  • Some dogs take longer to catch on.:)

Tether her to you when she is in the house and you are at home --- this way, if she circles or goes into her peeing or pooping routine, you can catch her in the act and take her outside -- after which you'll praise the hell out of her and give her a treat.;)

Take her out right away in the morning, right before each meal and directly after she eats and before bedtime.  Crate her also.

Taking her out between meals also.

When she pees or poops outside, praise her like crazy and give her a treat.

We also need a photo of that doggie.:)
  • At this age she can only hold it for about 3 hours, so you have to work around that. This means taking her out even in the middle of the night or waking up to a dog with pee all over her. When she poops in the house, take it out and put it in the yard. Dogs go potty where they smell they should, they can't understand words so smells are they instructions. When she does go in the house, and at this age, she isn't gonna be perfect it will happen. Soak as much of it up as possible, clean the carpet with a vinegar solution, and if you want it to dry quicker you can put some baking soda over it and vacuum that up after it's completely dry. Vinegar cancels out the smell of urine, b/c if she still smells it she'll continue to urinate there.

If you need to stay outside with her to urinate 8 more times, then do it. You have to set her up for success otherwise you're confusing her. Praise her like crazy when she goes potty outside, and when she goes inside there isn't much you can do to punish her unless she still squatting and even then you can confuse her. This isn't a behavior like chewing on inappropriate toys, she has to go potty, and punishing her for that will confuse her.

Don't leave her food and water out after she's finished eating, if she has access to water all the time you may not be able to watch and see how much she's drinking and when. Dogs show that they have to go in different ways too, so it might take a bit to figure out how she acts. My boy paces and gets very antsy, and whines. My girl, doesn't make a sound, and it's hard to catch but she'll start sniffing.

I don't have kids, and I'm sure they add a little more stress to the situation, but remember just like with kids we have to be persistent and patient. Your puppy wants to please you, you just have to help her understand how to do that.

Thank you - she is crated when we leave as well and does really well. I do take her out before nad after each meal and regularly inbetween

I have good luck with the first 2 or 3 pees but then she just keeps going. She will pee 6-8 times in 1.5hrs. I cant seem to get her to go just once or twice and then hold it for an hour or two. Im hoping it will come with age but Im not sure how much longer I can keep DH on board. He is tired of stepping in pee puddles.

I have been rewarding with treats outside as well but will amp that up and hope it helps

Its been forever since I uploaded a pic here...what is that website

thank you. I do take up food and water so she doesnt have it all day.  I have her babygated to the livingroom with me so if it happens, its not on carpet.

We both grew up with dogs and cats and this isnt the first puppy but she has been the hardest to train for sure

  • oh my goodness she is a cutie!!!!

The others gave good advice. I just wanted to say that it will take time, she isnt going to learn overnight and she is still really young at 11 weeks.  I have a 5 month old puppy who still has at least one accident a week.

Thank you - she really is a sweetie. Im trying to explain to DH that it is a longer process. Its not an overnight thing. Hes just being grumpy.  I just wish she would start to catch on a bit better. One or two a day he could understand but some days we aren't even hitting the 50% mark. She will be outside for an hour and come in and pee... Its like shes holding it

  • Just a thought, has she been checked for a UTI?  I'd want to rule that out as well as continuing the puppy training.

If you can't be with her in the house and she goes off into another area of the house to pee, then crate her or tether her to you.

Be sure that when she does go in the house that you do not punish her for it, you just clean it up and take her right outside.  If you catch her in the act, interrupt her and take her right outside.  Treat and praise immediately and give it a command while she is peeing outside.  Whatever you want call it so that she'll connect when you give her the command to what it means.

Clean up with an enzyme cleaner following the directions on the bottle.

This was my first thought. If the puppy really is peeing every 10-12 minutes it sounds like a UTI would be the culprit.

I hadn't thought about that. Ill book her into the vet

  • I agree with the other posts, but a UTI was my first thought too.  Let us know what the vet says.  My pup had reoccuring UTIs for the first month or so we had her.  They are pretty common in female puppies because their girl parts aren't fully developed.  We had to let my pup go through one heat cycle before spaying her so her parts could mature.  My inlaws went through the same thing with their female lab.  Going through a heat was miserable, but much better and less expensive than constantly treating UTIs.  It's also impossible to housebreak a dog with a UTI, not to mention unfair.  Good Luck I hope she catches on soon!
