Looks like we may be settling on Belize for our 10-year anniversary trip next February/March. We are planning on 5 nights. Can someone share their experience there? What part of the country is the best location for accommodations? Did you rent a car? Suggestions on things to do? It looks like there are lots of fun things to do there -- snorkeling, fishing, cave tubing, ziplining. I think it will be a nice mix of relaxation time (for me) and mild adventure (for DH). Thanks for any suggestions!
Edited to add: Do you need to take a flight from Belize City to your final destination? I was reading that some of the cayes are several hours' drive from the airport you fly into, and a domestic flight may be recommended.
Re: Belize, please!
LOVE Belize!!!
We stayed at Victroria House on ambergris Caye

It was amazing!!! If you stay on one of the liitle islands you do not need a car(there are very few) you get everywhere by water taxi.
Belize is one of our most favorite places in the world!
My husband and I just returned from Belize in August. Belize is very laid back, no one is really dressed up and the atmosphere is relaxed. The food was awesome and $1 US dollar gets you $2 Belize dollars. A small plane will take you to and from any of the islands from Belize City. We stayed in Placencia at Roberts Grove...very lovely place.
Make sure if you bring bug spray we were eaten alive by sand flies one night while eating by the calm ocean. Sand flies are way worse than the mosquito. We did a monkey river tour which included a jungle tour, meal, seeing monkeys ect. Anyway, what I loved most about Belize is how far my dollar went and the lovely people who treat you like family.
We haven't been to Belize yet, but when we do I want to stay here:

Caye=Island...so you have to fly or take the water taxi to get to one of those. Most destinations are far (Hopkins and Placencia) also, so you would probably want to fly to those as well. The nicer resorts, like Hamanasi, will have a package that includes the flight.
We went to Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye. CC is much more laid back, no cars, most places only take cash- perfect for relaxing, but not fancy. AC is more happening...night life, bars, bigger, nicer resorts/hotels and more restaurants. Be advised...Belize is not know for its beaches. In AC, if you want to layout near the water you will need a hotel with a private beach area.
On the mainland we stayed in San Ignacio and Hopkins. Most activities such as cave tubing and zip lining are on the mainland, so San Ignacio is a good jumping off point for that, but not near a beach. Many tour companies will fly you from the cayes to the mainland for the tours. Even Hamanasi (in Hopkins) fly people to the cave tubing. Placencia is even further, so flying is a must unless you have an extra day just for the drive.
The people, food and value is great! Highly recommend Belize!
We just returned from our honeymoon in Belize and LOVED it! Many people do a jungle/beach split and that's what we did: 4 nights in San Ignacio for jungle adventure and 4 nights on Ambergris Caye for relaxation, beach, and snorkeling. I would highly recommend both of our resorts (Table Rock Jungle Lodge and Grand Caribe Resorts) but Trip Advisor's website is your best friend in finding places to stay.
My husband talked me into renting a car for the jungle portion (after our Belize-specific travel agent talked him into it - I would also highly recommend her - Katie Valk - she really knows her stuff!) and I'm so happy we did. It wasn't that difficult to adjust to, it gave us lots of freedom, and reduced our costs for our trips since we could meet the tour operators in town instead of paying for them to come pick us up at our resort. It takes about 2 hours to drive from Belize City to San Ignacio and the Belize Zoo is on the way.
On previous visits to Belize we did ziplining and cave tubing at Jaguar Paw's resort and both were fun. The Belize Zoo is a great stop on the way from Belize City to the inland jungle areas and I *highly* recommend going. This trip we also went hiking and swimming in the Mountain Pine Ridge, took a guided tour to the Mayan ruins of Tikal in Guatemala, and went to the ATM cave. The ATM would definitely satisfy your husband's desire for adventure and it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. If you're healthy and active, I wouldn't miss it for the world.
As for the beach, Ambergris Caye is busier and more developed than Caye Caulker and Placencia. We didn't plan much for the beach portion but I would highly recommend doing a snorkel trip to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley. The Sol Spa at The Phoenix resort in Ambergris Caye was wonderful, although pricey.
Obviously, I could go on and on about Belize, so if you want more info, feel free to message me
