looking to train for a half
I've done 3 half marathons, but not since I've had kids, so its been over 3 years. Since having kids my longest run has probably been 5 miles, but it's usually 2 1/2-3, 2 or 3 times a week. To celebrate turing 30 I've decided I'd like to do a half this May. Do you think it's too early to start a formal training plan? I remember I used one through runners world where you type in your distance, how often you want to run, the date of the race and it comes up with a plan, I don't see it anymore though, can anyone recommend one? Most of my runs will probably be on a treadmill or with a jogging stroller, I don't really think that should be an issue right?

Re: looking to train for a half
Most 1/2 marathon training programs are around 12 weeks, so starting a formal training program now for a May 1/2 is pretty early. But you could certainly work on getting your base mileage up - maybe try and do 3-4 mile runs 3 times a week and then a 5-6 mile run on the weekends? Or you could also do some speed work to work on your pace if you're interested in that?
There are quite a few different programs out there, but my favorite is Hal Higdon's. http://www.halhigdon.com/training/
I don't think it's an issue to run with a jogging stroller, and I don't think it's an issue to do a lot of treadmill running throughout the winter. But come late winter/early spring, when you really want to start training, I'd probably try and do your majority of the running outdoors.
I didn't run a 1/2 (or any significant distance) between getting PG w/ #1 and after weaning #2 so I just started slowly building up. If you have done 3-1/2s already, you know that most beginner/intermediate plans will have you running 3-4 days/week, including a long run once a week (usually on a weekend, but moms have to flexible)! If your goals are little more ambitious, you may want to run 5 days, including a speedwork day and a XT day too. I run 3 (sometimes 4) days a week and only do between 18-23 mpw and I ran 2 10 milers, 2 halfs, and a bunch of smaller races this year. I am not breaking any records out there but I feel pretty good.
If you are looking for a decent training plan, try Hal Higdon. Most plans are 12 weeks, which would mean starting in Feb. In the few months between now and then, stick w/ your 10-15 mile base and build up if you can (but you don't have to). If 3 miles feels hard, keep working on that. If it feels easy, try to add in a 4 or 5 miler once a week.
GL!
