if anyone can help it's you ladies..I need some major prayers.
A week ago my mom's lab murphy ate 2 lbs of red twizzlers. He was vomitting that night and pooping red poop. but a day or two later he was better. they had slowly been feeding him small meals.
today he became very lethargic and did not want to eat or really drink. A few hours later he started to vomit blood.
They are at the e-vet now and he's having a blood transfusion. He is still bleeding and they don't know the cause. They also don't know if he will make it. This is the same dog that use to curl on the couch with my mom as a puppy while she was going through chemo/radiation treatments for her cancer and would come home exhausted and drained. The same dog who after each of her surgeries for breast cancer was careful never to jump or hurt her... the same crazy dog that even my food aggressive, same sex aggressive malamute Apache seems to get along with. And the dog that freya loves to play with..Please keep him in your thoughts tonight. I don't know what my mom will do without him..
Re: I know it's been ages but serious prayer needed..
Poor doggie. This is a shame; I'll keep him in my prayers.
I don't think it was the twizzlers. I'm waiting for the vet to open so I can bring him in. They sent him home after giving iv fluids. He woke up this morning with white gums.
But thank you for yours prayers. Something tells me he will need them.
Thank you ladies for the continued prayers. Murphy ended up back at the vet. I almost broke down when my brother brought in this 80 lb ragdoll that could barely lift his head. His gums were bleach white. His blood levels dropped to 13, I forget which ones. They did some tests and ruled out tick diseases and any other parasites. He was still vomitting blood so they believe its a Bacteria infection. We put him on iv fluids and antibiotics. A couple hours later and he lifted his head and thumped his tail when we went in to see him. His gums even has some color to them.
He still wasn't entirely better so we decided to go with a blood transfusion. It took a few hours but we were able to see him again. I felt so bad when they brought him out. He ended up having really bad diarrhea with blood twice. They will keep him over night. Hopefully this will be it. Please continue to keep him in your thoughts. While they think the bacteria is the issue they still don't know what triggered this.
Its going to be a rough couple of days.
So so sorry.:( What a shame.:(
My brother's dog died a couple months ago; she was 6 and my good friend's sis's dog got a liver problem, clear out of the blue, and died -- she was 101/2. This happened last week.:(
I don't know why dogs die at such a young or youngish age. 12 isn't old for a dog and neither is a shade over 10 years of age.
Sorry about poor Murphy.:(

Thank you everyone. Murphy had hemorraghic gastroenteritis. There is no known cause for it. I think he may have been showing symptoms previously but we didn't know because of the two pounds of twizzlers he had gotten into about a week before. He had reddish diarrhea the day he got into the twizzlers but we all thought it was them.
My mom said when she is ready she's giving my all of Murphy's toys and unopened cans of food for our shelter. There will be some happy pups there. I think I'll see if I can give out the toys and take pictures so my mom can see all the dogs being helped.
Right now she's decided she will never have another dog but I have suggested being a foster home or even looking into guiding eyes. This way she can still have a dog but its not permanent. Anyone know who covers medical bills for fosters?
I'm so sorry for your mom's loss.
I know the shelter will be grateful for the toys and food.
DH and I are currently on a fostering break because of DS and some anxiety issues with our own cats, but the local shelter we foster for covers all medical expenses, food, etc for foster parents. I think some rescues do not.
I know our shelter is always looking for foster parents. We fostered kittens, so I'm not too sure how the puppy side worked in terms of time commitment.

I am so, so sorry. You'll all be in my prayers.
As for fostering, I haven't fostered for anyone who's required us to pay for medical bills. We've always paid for food, but that's it.
