Cleaning up my cooking style! Show me what ya got!

Over the past few months I have been transforming the way I cook. I grew up eating southern cooked comfort food my whole life and although I love me a good meal cooked by grandma any chance I get, it isn't always the healthiest. :-/  I used to frequent this board when I first got married and I definitely took everyones advice here to switch from canned to frozen/fresh vegetables. Well you guys were right, it took a little getting used to but now I can't stand the tasted of canned veggies! yay! Thanks guys! I have definitely cleaned up our eating and have switched to grass fed meats and such. I am getting more and more adventurous...juicing, replacing potatoes with cauliflower, using palm oil instead of veggie/olive oil, etc! But DH and I are about to start TTC and I want to get super healthy and I am look for everyones best healthy tip, recipe, healthy cooking clog, etc! I want all your health tips!! TIA to everyone!!

  • Not sure if this counts as cooking, but here goes:

When I get home from the store I wash all produce asap. I fill my sink with 1 part vinegar to 10 parts water. I throw in all of my fruits in there and let them soak for about a half hour. I also throw in lettuce. This gets all the yucky gunk off of there, like pesticides and stuff. If you wash your strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries like this, it will make them last longer, too. And you don't even have to rinse them off because you can't taste the vinegar at all!

Also, when storing produce, make sure you pay attention to what should be washed before it goes in your fridge (like lettuce) and what shouldn't be washed first (like green beans and tomatoes). It will help your foods stay fresher longer so you won't waste as much food or money on spoiled stuff.

  • My biggest tip is substitutions. FI has a milk allergy so in order to cook I have to make substitutions - its been the biggest learning curve but also the source of my weight loss.

There's lots of websites that will give you ideas for different types of substitutions. For example, in baking I replace oil with unsweetened applesauce. Check this website here for a full list of substitutions:

Also, one of the secrets to my weight loss is just counting calories via an app on my phone (although this isn't a cooking tip) - it also will keep track of all your nutrients so you can really ensure a healthy diet by fulfilling all your nutrient needs :)

    Good luck!

  • I have a healthy tag in my blog.

I like keeping my kitchen well stocked, so if plans do not work out, then I can always pull together a meal in a pinch. I can my own tomato sauce, so I keep a spaghetti squash around at all times during this time of year for a very simple meal if I need it. During winter I will keep some pasta in the house so we can eat spaghetti instead of going out. I also keep a lot of soups and chilis in the freezer so I can always thaw dinner out if I need to.
