Poor pup

My dog woke me up at 1 this morning wheezing.  He usually does this if he gets too excited, or pulls to hard on his leash.  DH thinks it might've been dream related?  I'm not sure if I should call the vet ASAP, or wait until his check-up next month.  This has never happened before.  Especially waking from being asleep for a few hours.  Does anyone have insight or advice?  Anything would be appreciated.  TIA!

Re: Poor pup

  • Sounds like a panic attack, either from a dream or something that spooked him, though he probably has asthma anyways. I have a little Chihuahua mix that gets freaked out every once in a while and starts barking and howling, and when I go grab him he's panting like crazy. I think it's just because DH and I's schedule has been hectic lately and he, and my other two dogs, miss us. If it continues to happen, I would ask your vet about it. Do you have him on anything for his wheezing? Also how old is he and what breed? Wheezing is very common in labs as they get older.

  • what breed of dog do you have?

if it is a braceaphalic breed, this can happen at any time really...

I have a pug and a chihuahua, and when one of them start this, (I know this is going to sound mean...) I wrap my pointer finger and tumb around their muzzle so they can't open their mouth, and blow a puff of air into their nostril.  When they start wheezing, their trachea may have collapsed shortly, and breathing through their nose will open it back up.  Just do a short and not really strong puff of air, just enough for them to take a breathe through their nose...GL!!!

  • He's a jack russel mix.  I'm not sure what he's mixed with.

    ETA: He's 4.

My oldest dog is the same mix (We think Jack Russell and Manchester Terrier, with a little Chihuahua in him), and is also 4. Is he the only dog you own? If so, I am pretty confident in saying he's having anxiety. Jack Russell's are notorious for their high-energy, which even in people can turn to anxiety. Mine had it so bad he was always howling and panting and shaking because he was so nervous when I wasn't right next to him. All of that went away when we got our second dog. It jmight be worth looking into getting him a friend if you are able to, but you need to make sure that you DO NOT get another high-energy, dominant breed. The second dog we got was a chihuahua and they bonded right away. He has just enough energy to keep up with my Jack Russell, but not so much that it's threatening to him.

One thing you can try, whether or not you get another dog, that I use on my dog, is a calming collar. You can get them at PetSmart for $15 or WinCo has them for around $8. It seems to take off the edge and lasts for 30 days. Also, make sure he gets his energy out during the day. A simple walk around the block will not work, he needs to be running daily, if his wheezing doesn't get in the way. If you have time, go on a quick run in the evening. Also, if you aren't doing this already, bring him to a dog park once a weekend if you can. Good luck!

Thank you for your advice!  We have a Shih Tzu as well, and she's 2 years older than him.  They get along pretty well, but obviously he's the alpha.
