Amish Friendship Bread...

Has anyone ever had this?  My mom used to make it all the time when I was growing up...but I can't remember if I've ever actually done it.  My friend gave me a starter bag the other day.  I'm so excited because I think the bread tastes amazing...my hubby on the other hand thinks its absolutely disgusting that the bag sits out for days with milk and such in it...I can't say I disagree with the concept being a lil foul, but I keep telling him he has to eat when I make it...but we'll see...

Re: Amish Friendship Bread...

  • I have never had it myself but I read a book one time and it was all about Friendship Bread and how to make it etc. Thats the extent of my Friendship Bread knowledge.

  • I used to love Amish Friendship bread and Irish Soda Bread.  My mom would make them all the time.  So good.

If you can splurge... go to the deli section of the grocery store where the fancy cheeses are, and look for Kerry Gold butter.  It's imported from Ireland.  It's the greatest butter in the universe, and it tastes amazing on that bread.

  • I have not made it in a long time, but I think it is really good too!

  • I don't know if i've ever had it. I do know that when we were growing up my mom and neighbor used to trade starter bags all the time
  • I used to love this as a kid... my mom would bring it home from work and I'd make it!  I've never thought about it sitting out, guess I figured since it's popular it doesn't make you sick.

  • My mom used to make it when I was little, but I have never made it myself. It is really good.
  • Someone gave my mom a starter bag and the 2 of us would do it then take the bread to my grandmothers nursing home for her friends and the staff.  It went on for a couple months until we ran out of people to give the extra starter bags to.  Lol

It is very good though and my DH was also weirder out about leaving it on the counter.

  • One time H's coworker gave him a starter bag and he was super excited to do it.  It was kind of random for him to be so into it.

  • Thank you all for responding....I can show him proof that people, other than me have survived after eating such bread!  And I will definitely look for that butter to try.  I'm gonna make it for 3 weeks until we go to Germany, then ill have to give ally starters away :(
