finding your decorating style?

Hi ladies, A little bit of background I'll make it simple I didn't own a place before moving to my DH's  apartment. Having that cover I moved in July 2011 and got married in April 2012. The place still looks like it's his. I put some pics, etc. But I can't find my own decoration style!

I don't know where to start.  I don't like flowers and beach styles! At least I know what I dislike!

Thnks

Re: finding your decorating style?

  • I would suggest going on Pinterest and looking at home decor. Pin what appeals to you and look for common themes, i.e clean lines, bright accent pieces, or tribal patterns. This might help you determine your personal decorating style.

Yep, this.  The easiest way to ID your style is to look at a million pictures, collect the ones you like, then analyze them. GL!

  • I would suggest looking at what you have as well.  We have a beautiful pine living room set and exposed brick walls, so we used that as a jumping off point for modern rustic decor.  There's no need to buy all new stuff, unless you need all new stuff.

  • pinterest is great to find things to fit into a decor style once you know the style, sounds like you don't even know where to begin.

I like browing www.houzz.com for style ideas and then figure out ways to use some of the elements that are practical for your own space. Its a mix of professionally decorated and self decorated so its got a TON of ideas and they are all divided into catagories of styles (or room or whatever you need) so its easy to look through a few of each and figure out what your more drawn to.

THEN go to pinterest to find the cheap/diy things to create/complete the look.

  • Take it easy and it will come naturally. As you go from room to room you will find small things to change that will make big changes!

While your shopping online or on the street you would find many nice home decor etc that would look great in your new home.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you all! I really appreciate it!
  • Sounds like you've got some good advice here. One thing an interior designer once told me was to work off something you love. If there's a piece of art, a fabric, piece of furniture, rug, even a knick knack, you love use it as your starting point. Decorate with other colors from it in the rest of the room, or decorate the rest of the room with whatever style it is (rustic, modern, etc.)
My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.
