Dog ate pork chop bones - need your opinion (lengthy)

Hey all! Lurker here.

So, Friday night, our dog, Greta ate two cooked pork chop bones. DH and I were out in the garage, came back in to find our trash all over our kitchen. How she got into it, we have no idea. We have child safety locks on the cabinet under our sink, where our trash is. I'm about 80% sure she ate them. They were on top of our trash and when I was putting the trash back in, I didn't find them.

She is a 60 lb Shar-pei/Weimaraner just over a year old.

I called the vet Saturday AM and they told me to just keep an eye on her. I have the emergency phone number in case anything happens today. She's been pooping like a champ. Saturday she pooped like 4/5 times - she usually only poops twice (in AM and PM). As far as I could see, there wasn't anything unusual in the poops.

She has been acting and eating normally. I took her for a 2 mile walk today and she did great. Right now she's bouncing off the walls like she's on crack.

SO, my question is, how long does it take before we're in the clear? It's been 48 hours and she's fine. I also have a tendency to over-react so I didn't know if I was just a freaking out puppy parent. Thoughts?

  • Hmm, I don't know the answer. My suggestion would be to call your vet back and ask.
  • About 6mo ago my year old Labrador ate four raw pork chops, bone and all while my MIL was watching him. Vet said the same thing. We never noticed anything out if ordinary except loose stools a few days later. I'm sure it'll be fine!
