Is this a good deal?

Sorry if this is the wrong board to post this on...

How much would you pay for the dining set shown below? The original price is about $900. But I found it on sale for $289. DH thinks it's a bad deal because it is only a 4-seater. I, however, think it's a steal, and we need a new dining room set anyway. Would you buy it? Why/why not?

Re: Is this a good deal?

  • Is this for a kitchen eating area or a dining room?

If the former, nope. If the latter, still nope.

Former: I don't think the faux leather chairs will stand up to too much daily use.

Latter: A formal dining table that seats only four is too small IMHO. If you're using a dining table, it is typically for a large meal with multiple guests. A 4 top is too small.

Thanks for your input. We would put it in the "formal" dining room, but would use it daily. There isn't room in the kitchen to use it as an eat-in table.

  • I'm a big believer that any dining room table should be able to seat 6. Whether there is a leaf or no leaf. I have a 4 seater in my kitchen and I hate it.

  • Not worth it. 4 seats is not enough for a formal dining room. (Imo)

  • Don't let the 4 chairs deter you. It is in style to have different chairs. Buy two chairs and stick one on each end and you have an eclectic set. OR get a bench for the empty side. I have a few tables and no more than two matching chairs.

  • I just feel "meh" about this.
  • I think it's too small for formal dining room. This looks like the table we had when we lived in small apartment and had no visitors. If you have a house and decent size dining area, I suggest getting table that sits 6.
  • Oooh, I like the idea with the bench.

It looks like you can fit the 4 chairs and a bench. You could do a really cool upholstery which would break up the brown/leather and could take it from ok to super cool.

If you don't have a ton of space it looks like a good compromise and has the potential to seat 6.

  • The upholstery/benches idea sounds cool, but it seems like a lot to do to add benches, upholstery, etc, making it cost more $.  I agree with the others that a formal dining room should have a table that can at least seat 6. If you find a table that has insert leaves to it, you can keep it a table for 4 for most days when it is you and your DH, but have the inserts to create enough room to seat more if you have people over. Trust me, you can never have too much table room for get-togethers, etc.

  • I'd say it's a good deal IF:

    A) You can afford it/are comfortable spending that

    B)  LOVE it and don't think it will go out of style/get sick of it within a few years.

Remember that companies mark things up up up to mark them down so people feel like they're getting a steal when it really only cost them like $100 to make 2,000 of them.

Also, being a four seater only matters if you are someone who has people over often. If not, then this is fine. If you do, you'll soon get irritated with the little space.

  • I agree with others on the fact that it might be a little small. We were given a 4 person table and it's hard to invite people over for dinner because we run out of space very quickly.
