Need Help Choosing Rug for Playroom (PIP)

Hi Everyone!

I wish I had more pictures to show you but I am starting to turn my attention to the kids playroom and want to give it a little makeover. Its a pretty simple room (maybe 12' by 12' or so), currently has light tan walls and only two IKEA bookshelves (dark brown color) and lots of toys. :) I put together a couple of photos on the wall a while back and decided on a mix of green, blue and orange since we have a boy and girl. Outside of the pictures below, the only thing we have in there with those colors are the storage bins that fit into the bookshelves.

What I'd like to do is buy two more of the Billy bookshelves from Ikea (they are the shorter ones, maybe 3 - 4 feet tall). I'd like to line one wall with those (in white), repaint a light gray on the walls and start to bring in some color. I was thinking about starting with a rug since it seems to be easier to find other things to match the rug, versus finding a rug that matches other decor (could be totally making that up though haha).

Here is a picture of what we have on the walls and the colors that I'm going for (although the storage bins are more Navy then anything).

Here are a few of the rugs that I have been stalking for a while on rugs.com. Do you think the orange is too much? Would you recommend one over the other? They seem to all get good reviews online (all outdoor rugs I think). I think I am just afraid to buy color, but that's what I really need!!

Any advice you guys would have would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

  • #2 is exactly what I was picturing before I scrolled down to see your options.
  • I really like the orange one. It's fun and bright, while still having a level of sophistication. Perfect for a play room
  • Thanks!! I love the pattern of those two and the Navy one is the one that I am most drawn to but I keep trying to push myself to get more color. I dont love the picture of the third one online but saw that in Centsational Girls blog and love it in her pictures (looks much brighter in her blog).

  • If you are going to take a risk in any room, let it be the playroom, since it's not permanent.

I have to say I was expecting to see road rugs in a post about playroom rugs. Our official playroom is our sunroom off our dining room and I just have 2 road rugs in there- but we totally close the space off when we entertain adults.

  • I like the blue rug.  It's a little less intense than the other ones. I know it will be for a play room, but you really do want to take into consideration the colors and patterns you use.  It could potentially be too much stimulation for a child. Just FYI
  • Sounds like you're getting positive responses on all the rugs. My vote would be for the orange rug because I think it's very suitable for a kids playroom with the colours.
  • Despite the fact that I absolutely love the colour orange, I would go with the navy rug and add smaller orange accents through artwork, bean bags, toy bins, etc.
  • I vote the orange rug!
