DH and I recently became first-time annual passholders for Disney. We've heard Disney does some neat stuff at the holidays, but didn't get all the specifics.
So I was wondering what are the main special events or special displays Disney does for the holidays and where are they held? My main reason for asking so early is that we're planning to go out there this weekend (before all the holiday events begin, presumably), as well as next month, and I'd like to plan to see different parks or, at least, different areas of them on each visit.
TIA, ladies!

Re: Disney Holiday Events?
There are so many things they do! Lots of the events are in the maps when you go to the parks, you can probably search them online as well.
The Candlelight Processional at Epcot is really neat. It usually has a long wait to get in. You can always book a restaurant and get priority seating to it. They also have the different ways they celebrate the holidays around the world. It's a choir/ orchestra performance and they have a celebrity guest speaker that narrates the story of Christmas.
They used to have an awesome display of lights at MGM. They still do the lights but it's not quite the same as it used to be but definitely worth going to see if you have a pass!
All of the parks usually have some holiday shows as well. : )
Thanks, ladies!
We've only used our passes twice, so far, and both times were to go to Food & Wine at Epcot! So fun!
Actually, the Candlelight Processional sounds cool, so maybe we'll have to go back to Epcot next month, but maybe we'll save that and MGM for December and go either Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom this time. DH hasn't been to any of the parks since he was a little boy, so we're trying to make sure we see them all within the year.
Thanks again
Disney tapes the Christmas parade the first weekend in December. If you've never been to a tv taping, it can be interesting to see. But it can be boring after awhile since they do the same float / display over and over again for the cameras. It's amazing to see how they make everything look so fluid and "live" on television. lol
Anyways, they typically reserve an early morning taping of the Christmas parade for annual passholders. You'll see information on it, as well as the other Christmas events, in your AP newsletter.
The Candlelight Processional is amazing...really a great way to get in the Christmas spirit. I would recommend taking advantage of the dinner reservations that guarantee you a seat at the processional - people stand in line for hours to get a good seat, so it's really worth it.
The lights at MGM are also very nice! I went to the "Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party" one year and didn't think it was anything fabulous - just paying to get a few extra hours and a cup of hot chocolate. Who knows, it might have gotten better, but it didn't really do anything for me.
I have to agree with you on MVMCP (Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party). Other than some of the stage shows, there really isn't anything special about the night. Although, I do think it's fabulous that Disney still showcases equity dancers, even if for one month a year. ((
They used to include a free 5x7 family photo at MVMCP, but they even cut that out years ago.
The Halloween Party on the other hand....that's well worth the ticket price!!
You don't need your pass to get in but you should also check out some of the hotels at Christmas time. Grand Floridian and Yacht and Beach are my favorites.
On a different note, if anyone is heading out this weekend, Downtown Disney is hosting Festival of the Masters this weekend so lots of cool art to check out and no admission or parking fees.
I'm going tomorrow!!!
Our family's favorite thing at Disney is the lights at MGM. Go to YouTube and put in MGM lights or Osborne Family Lights (like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhxzouF3ANE&feature=related). They play all sorts of different songs about every 10 minutes and the lights "dance" to the music.
The whole back lot area is filled with lights...really nice to walk around.
Love it!
I agree with all PPs. I just have to tell you how cool Candlelight is. There are always different guest narrators all the time. Here is this year's list:
11/28 - 30: John O'Hurley 12/01 - 03: Neil Patrick Harris 12/04 - 12/6: Brian Stokes Mitchell 12/07** - 12/9: Virginia Madsen 12/10 - 12/12: Marlee Matlin 12/13 - 12/15: Monique Coleman 12/16 - 12/18: Chita Rivera 12/19 - 12/21: Abigail Breslin 12/22 - 12/24: Steven Curtis Chapman 12/25 - 12/27: Edward James Olmos 12/28 - 12/30: Angela Bassett & Courtney VanceWhen I was in high school our choir performed in it twice and it was the best experience I ever had. Very moving and spiritual. Our guest narrators were Phylisha Rishad and Barbara Eden both were wonderful.
Have lots of fun!
LOL at Golden Girls suburbs! I was sooo sad when they demolished residential street and the Golden Girls house.... it was so great when you could walk down that street covered in lights...it's just not the same anymore. : (
The Osborne Family lights are neat - nothing like they used to be - but definitely worth going. Even though it's pretty crowded, be there when they turn them on, it's pretty cool. They're fun now that they "dance" too.
If you're going to see Candlelight I highly recommend going to hear Steven Curtis Chapman read the Christmas Story. I know his dates are near Christmas this year but he is absolutely amazing!! We're coming home for Christmas and hope to see him.
I can't believe that they tore down residential street - everyone I know was upset with that decision. If they had to make way for Lights, Motors, Action, why not tear down the half empty feature animation office building.
On the topic of Hollywood Studios - do you remember when the backstage tour actually took you "backstage"? Ahh, those were the days!
Yeah! They used to tape a lot of tv shows and movies at MGM back in the day. They originally wanted it to be the Hollywood of the East...but we all see how that turned out.
