Apocalypse?
I don't think senators would substitute their own judgment for the judgment of their voters. They'd be voting based on partisanship and disenfranchising their state's citizens who voted for Ryan just as much as they voted for Romney.
There are more states that will go for Romney, so the senators should follow the vote in their states.
But what would happen if the new Senate was 50-50 and all of them would vote based on partisanship? Who breaks the tie?
I read a scenario where the House speaker takes over... I can't remember exactly what it was, but it was legit.
