Help a fashion-challenged girl out!

Ok Ladies!  I'm in desperate need of some fashion advice!  I'm admittedly not the most fashionable person, but now that I'm working with a new body post-baby, I'm looking to revamp my wardrobe with things that I LIKE that will fit me and my style. :)  What tips do you have for me when it comes to putting together a wardrobe from scratch?  I need to build my daily wardrobe as well as professional clothing for work.

Things I like: natural fabrics, earth tones, blues, comfortable
Things I want to avoid: too much black, overly casual work clothing, clothing I have to adjust often, difficult items to launder/dry clean only (I'm a new mommy!)

What basic items MUST I get?
Where should I be shopping?
What should I be spending my money on vs. looking for bargains?

  • You should spend the most on work clothes because they directly impact perceptions and your ability to advance in your career. Read the book "Womens Dress for Success" (new, not original version). It will spell all of this out for you. This applies even if you work in a "casual" work environment. In fact it is especially important if you work in a casual work environment.

  • Hi! I am a total shopoholic and a definite fashionista! Hope I can help

Basic items to get: Black and White T-shirts...(old navy) you can get Vneck or CrewCut. Whatever you want. Black Blazer, blazers are in and even though you may only wear this like once a year you will be glad you bought it and invested in it. LBD, again I know, BLACK but this is a closet staple. Find one that you can dress up and dress down with flats. Try THE LIMITED or Gap Or NYandCO. The Perfect Pair of Jeans, find ones that fit you perfectly. I love the limited and Gap for jeans. Camis get a variety of colors and textures. Some with lace some without. Cardigans again you can get a variety of colors, but do get basic black and white cause you can pop it up with colored cami underneath!

You seem like a READY TO WEAR person. Which means you can buy a top and a pant at the store and just wear that and be ok. That is how I am but I want to look super stylish at the same time so here is what you do: ACCESSORIES!!!!! They are your friend for ready to wear. Chunky scarves if you live up north or chunky necklaces. Lots of earrings and bracelets too. Handbags and shoes can also be great friends for plane jane no pattern or color days.

Stay away from patterns that dont flatter you. If you are a heavier set woman, like me, HORIZONTAL stripes are a NO NO. Vertical stripes are a YES. Stay away from the FADS of the time. Right now bold patterns are in with bold colors similar to that of the 70's and 80's. Find one or two colors from these palettes that you look good in and dont buy out of that cause next season this will be out of style, hence staying away from bold patterns. Color blocking is in right now but it will be out within one to two more seasons so dont invest heavily in this area although its popular. Ready to wear= no dry cleaning!

Bargains= falling apart! Although you can always have something altered. Spend time at your favorite shops and buy there. I get all my work clothes at: NY and CO, Victoria Secret.com, Express, WHBM, Guess and Macys. More relaxed things and casual Target, Old Navy, Gap, BR, Macys, etc.
