new stairway newel post

Hello! I am looking to replace the newel in our new house. I want a 6.25" box newel with a recessed panel and a flat cap on top. It needs to be oak so when I stain it it will match the floors. One like this:

Trouble is, some sites say $700 and some say $275 for seemingly similar items. Anyone have a good source for me to buy from or a guideline on how much should be spent?

Re: new stairway newel post

  • I poked around online for a little. I think a fair price might be several hundred...you have to factor in wood type, which for decent sturdy wood, is higher. Plus, craftsmanship...decent work will cost more. Some might be solid and others maybe hallow.

Since it's such a prominent piece, and it is in a high traffic area and will gets lots of movement around it, I would be sure to buy something really durable and sturdy.
