We are in Philly proper and are really struggling with what to do with our DS when he enters kindergarten next year. He is currently attending preK at a private Friends elementary in the area. We really like it but want to make sure that we consider all of our options and make the right choice for our family. So my specific questions are:
1. Are you familiar with Green Woods Charter? If we were lucky enough to get selected in the lottery, should we consider this over a private Friends education? At their old location, it seemed like the right choice for us but now that they are expanding, and changing locations, and don't need to advertise for applicants, the choice has become unclear. FWIW, we can still pay our bills with our current tuition but are behind on savings especially for retirement (WAY behind) and the extra money in our savings would be nice. We do have another child who would be entering school in about five years. We anticipate being able to pay for two tuitions and save some more at that point but there is no guarantee.
2. If your vote is to stay private, how would you choose between the different Friends schools? Do the open houses provide enough information to compare them? Are you aware of the major differences (mainly considering those in the NW area of the city - GFS, PMFS, Penn Charter, etc.).
Thanks for any insight that you can provide!!!
Re: Occasional Lurker looking for opinions on schools...
Hey! I don't know too much about the new location but I really loved the old facility at the SC. We moved to northwest in the Cooke wissahickon catchment which rates really well. Our neighborhood kids are flocking to the school so a good sign for us that we made a good choice.
Good luck with your choice you may want to check or Philly speaks message board too.
