Mirena to NFP

Hey Y'all! I post more on TheKnot (I'm getting married May 18th) and have been lurking more over here as the months roll by trying to wrap my head around the newlywed thing. So here's a little bit about me: 27 years old, an ICU nurse in Virginia and like I said, gettin' hitched May 18th, 2013!

I've been on multiple types of BC since I was 18 and have had the Mirena IUD since December '10. FI and I are both excited to try NFP after the wedding. We've heard a lot about it through our Church and friends who use it TTA. I've done research on FF.com, TCOYF, and numerous other websites, however, they don't have an open forum like this one where you can communicate with other NFP users on what works for them, tips, and tricks. Our plan is to have my Mirena taken out and get fitted for a diaphragm this December, the time when I get my usual Pap, which will give us a few months to get AF back on track, learn the ropes of charting, etc.

With all that being said, I would love to hear from the ladies of TheNest/TheBump who use NFP who are TTA (We will be actively TTC one year after the wedding).

Looking forward to hearing from and getting to know everyone :)

Re: Mirena to NFP

  • If you talk to your Catholic diocese they should be able to give you an in-dept series of classes for about $100.  If you figure that is the last time you will ever have to pay for birth control, and you won't need to worry about extra "stuff" in your body it is money well spent.  As far as the effectiveness, My DH and I have sex on a regular basis (a few times a week when I am not fertile) and we have not gotten pregnant in a year.
  • My husband and I have been married just over two months and we are using the Billings Ovulation Method of NFP, TTA.  When we were engaged, I read TCOYF, and started trying to chart and found myself feeling really confused and definitely not positive I was charting correctly enough to depend on the method to avoid a pregnancy.  That was when I found a Billings instructor. I really appreciated being able to ask questions and get continued feedback.  We started meeting with an instructor like 3 months before the wedding and by the time we got married I felt really confident that I could correctly use the method.  I would second the previous commenter that if you can find an instructor/class that it is really helpful.  If you start charting now, you should have plenty of time to figure it out before you plan to rely solely on it.

All that being said, we have been actively using the method TTA for just over two months and we both like it alot and so far it has been effective for us.  Obviously, we' haven't been married for a real long time, so take that advice for what it is worth.  Good luck! and congrats on your upcoming marriage!
