Angie's List - worth it?

In two years (hopefully), we're ripping out most of the carpeting in the house and replacing with wood/laminate and new tile in the kitchen (probably about 1500 sq ft).  We also want to have a built-in wine bar/bookshelf combo installed on one wall of our front room.  I'm starting the research process now so I have an idea of how much we need to sock away over the next couple of years.

So my question - is Angie's List worth it for the year leading up to this project?  We've never used it before.  Thanks!

Re: Angie's List - worth it?

  • In my opinion, nope. But then again my Dad is a contractor so I get everything done by him. But you shouldn't have to go on Angie's list, more than likely you know people who have renovated or know someone who has and they can refer someone to you. I don't see the point of Angie's list really...
  • I don't see point in Angie's list, I would ask friends, coworkers or relatives for their recommendations instead.
  • I put a request out to our few friends and coworkers in the area that have gotten new flooring, but the only person I know that had replaced all the cabinetry said the place they used is out of business now.  We have no family in Florida.

Based on your suggestions, I think I'll broaden the question to my friends on facebook who live here in central Florida - maybe they have friends who have done some major rennovations.  Thanks, ladies!

  • My fiance and I are the only family we have in AR, and we moved there for work, so I kind of get your situation. We have used Angie's list to find movers, someone to build our fence, and lawn/pest care. Everyone we found from there has been great. To me, it was worth it.

  • Great questions as I am moving into my first house next week and there's some stuff I need to get done but we don't know anyone around here that has a house. I'm still torn on it because I'm not into spending money like that just to get information. I'll most likely wait to do the project (kitchen backsplash) until I find someone to recommend me or I'll just price shop etc..idk about paying for information ya know?

Nothing there for Orlando.  I looked on our local Craigslist, but I hesitate to find a service there since there aren't any recommendations or references easily available.

  • I'm late on this, but the Better Business Bureau is a great way to check out businesses -- and it's free. Businesses have letter grades, you can see if they're members of the BBB or not (a good sign if they are) and you can see how many complaints they have, what types of complaints and how they responded to them.

  • I just wanted to say that my husband is a part-time handyman (used to be full-time) and has been getting business through Craigslist for years.  He does excellent quality work and is dependable, honest and fair.  It really is possible to find good people to provide services on Craigslist.  They're not all weirdos.  lol
