Halloween Block Party Menu critique
Some of the neighbors are in for our 1st block party this weekend. So now I need help with the menu:
I've had 2-4 people say they'll make an appetizer or baked good, but, the party's starting at my house. Tentatively 8-10 people or more... So here's what I'm thinking:
Appetizers:
1) Shrimp cocktail (to look like a brain)
2) guacamole (coming out of a pumpkin mouth to look like puke)
3) cheese ball (to look like a spider)
4) Chocolate pretzel rods (to look like mummies)
Drinks:
1) Syringe jello shots
2) Hard cider
3) wine
4) beer
Anything else?
Any tips for decor or music?
Thanks!
Re: Halloween Block Party Menu critique
Without knowing what others are bringing, it's hard to give feedback. Ignoring the "theminess", here's what you have:
Shrimp
Guacamole
Cheese
Chocolate Covered Pretzels
To me, that's not nearly enough and not well rounded for a meal or to cover hunger while drinking.
Thanks,
This is more of a cocktail hour than a dinner menu. Perhaps I should include pizza or something more substantial?
I don't think you need to go right to pizza, but if you're thinking 6 p.m., I know I'd expect to be fed.
Maybe add some heavier bread based dips and apps: Buffalo Chicken Dip, Pigs in a Blanket, etc.

Then minimize whatever you would serve yourself for dinner. Make some veggie sandwiches, veggie sliders, hummus, nuts, mozzarella sticks.
I'm also wondering about the shrimp if you're vegetarian.
Hubby eats fish.
I'm willing to make meat products I guess, I just don't want any leftovers cuz they'll go to waste.
Gotcha. It threw me off that there was shrimp but no mention of the vegetarian thing.
I don't think you need to serve meat just because others there might, but at 6 pm you should get some dinner type proteins in people. Like I said, think about what you normally like and make them in smaller portions.
The Talk had a few cute recipes today:
bloody brains- spaghetti squash with a tomato sauce in a shooter glass topped with a mozzarella ball with red peppers and olives to look like an eye ball.
Ghoulish soup- a creamy tomato soup with grilled cheese cut out like bats.
Cute ideas!
I think the tomatoe soup and grilled cheese will be great too if kids come around
