Footage from Sandy

I just wanted to share this footage of Sandy. I think people aren't realize the serious effects.

This is from a CT/RI border town. RI and CT were not hit AT all as hard as NJ (especially the shore) and NY were and you can see the devestation here.

I have realized that the rest of the country that isn't as involved is going on with business as usual attitude. I've noticed it from friends in other states through FB and from my clients that have been emailing with a "we need to get this done" attitude that are based in the midwest.

Let's take a second and realize, that just because people in the Northeast aren't crying for help because the people hit weren't all poverty level and just becuase many of hte areas hardest hit are vacation areas doesn't mean it isn't as serious!!!

Re: Footage from Sandy

  • What the hell do you mean, "just because people in the Northeast aren't crying for help because the people hit weren't all poverty..."?

For real? What are you implying?  Also, the response to this disaster is beyond belief better than the one to Katrina.  Perhaps that is what you were trying to say? That the federal response is sooooo much better, so people not in the area don't seem to realize how bad it is?

Either way, people realize.  It's awful. And a lot of places were hit hard, so pretty much everyone in this country probably knows someone affected.

ETA: I apologize for the snark. It just seemed like you were implying something with that statement that was very rude.  I am sorry if I misread it.  If you are in that area, I hope that you have fared okay.

  • I'm confused by your post. I think most of the country realizes how serious and devastating this storm was. DH and I have been watching the footage on the news and speaking with his parents in NJ and brother in Manhattan. But we still need to go on with "business as usual" in our lives - go to work, take the kids to school, etc. So I'm not sure what sort of response you are looking for.

I also am wondering what you're implying by saying people aren't crying for help because they aren't all poverty level. Are you trying to compare this to Katrina?

  • No, what I am saying is that people need to be a bit more cognitive of those on the East Coast at this time. Just because people were more prepared for this storm vs. other storms in the past does not mean that they don't need help, aren't still without power, that there is no devestation.

I didn't imply that because you live in Washington and called your brother in Manhattan you are the one I am speaking about. nice of you to reach out. It just seems that people aren't really being a cognitive of this storm for some reason.

The two PP's I guess were comparing it to Katrina. I wasn't comparing it to Katrina but other storms that have happened in the past. There is devestation here..it is cold out and people are without heat further North. People in Manhattan are trapped inside their buildings becuase the doors do not open without power or heat and the generators have long burnt out. Yet there was barely a wrinkle on this board about Sandy.

and i just have one thing to add.You keep saying "are you trying to compare this to katrina" originally I wasn't but is there a reason why I should not be? Millions are without power. Hundreds of thousands have been left homesless, many are dead... Sure it might not have been SUCH a large storm but it has effected many and is surely a MAJOR hurricane. This is the point I am making. just becuase people are self sufficent and are fending for themselves doesn't mean they don't need help!

  • No one said or implied that they didn't need help.

Exactly. There haven't been any posts on this board, but I've seen posts on almost every other board. And I don't think anyone here is under the impression that people don't need help.

The reason I questioned whether you were trying to compare it to Katrina was because it seemed you were trying to compare it to something but it wasn't clear what. But to be fair, Katrina had 4 times as much damage ($81 billion vs. and estimated $20 billion) and over 30 times as many fatalities. Not to say Sandy hasn't been devastating, but I'm not sure it's fair to compare the two in terms of response.

True. I agree with this. Different storm. Different outcome. Fact is fact. People in teh NE still need support, aid and prayers.

  • Again, again it was the PP's that mentioned Katrina I didn't

But I was just saying people need to be congitive. I wasn't saying poeple here weren't. But pretty much everyone I have spoken too outside the area has paid no attention to what is going on. I wasn't saying that people in Washington State shouldn't go to work, as a PP ridiciously implied. Just that perhaps if you work with East coast businesses be a bit more understanding. I had more customers than I can count in the past few days screaming on teh phone about their orders being late-- I mean seriously people? Let's be a bit sympathitic that UPS didn't get a chance to get your package on teh truck becuase there was 16" of water at the ups warehouse...

  • Also I mentioned this board in particular becuse it is the "current" events board. I was looking for some support and people to relate to. I didin't know I should go onto "holidays" or "Tax talk" to find postings about a CURRENT EVENT.
  • 1.  When you compare Hurricane Sandy storm victims to "people crying for help" because they're "all poverty level" it's reminiscent of another recent hurricane in which many, many people desperately cried for help, many of whom lived in alarmingly poverty-stricken areas.  If you weren't referring to Hurricane Katrina victims, then who were you referring to?

    2.  Of all of the boards to look for support, why on Earth would you look on P&CE?  All we do is ridicule each other.

With the election coming up, it's all political talk here.  No one wants to politicize Sandy, which is why there wasn't much talk of it.   I am still side eyeing you hard for your poverty level comment. What was it you were implying there?

And in case you hadn't noticed this board is not exactly hopping, so being offended no one is talking about Sandy when no one was posting about anything else either is ridiculous.

  •  I forgot that each knot and nest board because kind of a clique that doesn't necessarily talk about anything related to the topic... i am vaguely starting to remember this now from my knot days...that is so strange.

It wasn't just poor people in Katrina, there were lots of middle class families that were not minorities that were effected too...

Exactly, Brina! That's why your original statement of, " just because people in the Northeast aren't crying for help because the people hit weren't all poverty level and just becuase many of hte areas hardest hit are vacation areas doesn't mean it isn't as serious!!!" , was so strange.  You said, "AS serious!!!"  If you did not mean Katrina, which you claimed, then what was this storm not as serious as?

But nice back peddle! You hit the nail on the head with that one.  Good work!

  • Brina, no one minds that you brought up Sandy.  They're questioning why you're trying to compare victims by income level.

  • because, I don't feel like the whole thing 100% has to do with teh response rate of the federal government. I think it also has to do with the actions of hte people. If the people are self sufficent and are  figuring things out themselves, then they "aid" can help focus more on saving infastructure than saving someone off a rooftop because they refused to evacuate. when people follow the rules, then things fall into place a LOT easier...

Are you saying that the difference isn't that Katrina victims were poor, it's that they didn't "figure things out"?

  • uhhhhhh.... No I'm not saying that.

  • imageBrina105:

That's so strange, because it seemed like that was EXACTLY what you were saying.  Maybe you just aren't very good at explaining things?

  • I feel like this thread is one big ball of misunderstanding/unclarity.

I don't think Brina was saying what it sounded like she was saying.  If that even makes sense.

That's definitely possible.  TBH, I'm not really sure what she's trying to say.

I took it as a vent which can come across unclear to the reader but crystal clear to the author.  So I popped back out and ignored till now.

  • The way of life as we know it, those of us hit by Sandy, may be gone forever.

The Jersey Shore relies upon tourism for their ratables. FFS, the ocean has MOVED in many places; that means the ocean now covers what was the beach and yhou can't dredge and replenish to get it back to what it was.

Without those ratables, those towns and communities and cities are going to be hard pressed for money.

This also means businesses are lost. If you own a restaurant that was in the line of fire, so to speak, that could be the end of your livelihood.

We cannot get gas and every thing is bedlam in general.
