DH and I need to buy a new dinnerware set soon. I've picked out the Roulette set from Crate and Barrel: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/roulette-dinnerware/f11023
DH currently complains about the size of our dinner plates, and prefers to use salad plates for portion control.
Our dishes are available in open stock, so we don't have to buy the standard 4 or 5 peice set.
So, I could go with the standard 10.5 inch dinner plate and 8.25 salad plate, or I could buy open stock, and use the 8.25 inch plate as a dinner plate and the 6.25 inch small plate as a salad plate. Would the latter just be ridiculously small? Our current plates are around 11 inches, so either way we are scaling down.
I looked at the plates in person, but that was over a year ago, and I don't remember much except I liked them.
Re: Downsizing dinnerware plates
I actually have this exact set! We have the 4-piece settings with the mugs.
The 10.5 inch dinner plates are a bit large, but keep in mind that the plates have a fairly wide rim, so you won't be trying to fit food all the way to the edge. We have the blue rim version, which visually sort of makes the plate smaller. At least to me.
The 8.25 inch salad plate is a decent size, but IMO, it's too small if you're eating a meal that has more than a couple components (i.e. meat, veggies, potatoes). I tend to make one pot/pan meals, so we use the salad plates a lot. But if I'm making something like pasta and veggies on the side, the pasta ends up on a salad plate and the veggies in a bowl or we use the dinner plates.
I haven't seen the 6.25 inch small plate before. It sounds like a dessert plate? Even if you get the fully white set, you still have the rim to consider- making your plate even smaller. I don't think a salad would fit very well on it.
I hope this helps you. Whatever you decide, good choice on the set. It's very sturdy and looks beautiful.
