Sex While on Period?

Just wondering if you've ever had sex while you've been on your period? Is that OK? Any tips on minimizing the mess?

Re: Sex While on Period?

  • I've never done it, because I'm generally in a lot of pain the entire time, but it's perfectly okay for you to do. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

If you'd like the avoid the mess, either lay a towel or old blanket down, or do it in the shower or bath.

The only thing I would mention is to make sure you really clean yourself afterwards so you avoid getting any sort of infection, but you should do this after every time you have sex anyway. Always pee after sex to avoid a bladder infection! :)

  • We just always use the shower in this case.

  • Many, many times. DH doesn't think it's gross at all (or at least that's what he says, and goodness knows it doesn't stop him). I suggest what PP advised: lay down a towel or take a steamy shower together.

  • Yes. Yes. And either lay down towels or do it on sheets that already need to get washed.

  • Only did it once (last day of period) and put towel underneath, I was uncomfortable so didn't do it again. If you really want to, I suggest in shower.

From a guy's perspective, you really don't notice it.  The only thing you notice is that everything is all red when you're finished.  So definitely put something down or have the woman on top or do it in the shower during that time.

  • We have sex at the beginning or end of my period when it's not heavy. H wears a condom. We've never really made a mess.

I have done it. Strangely enough when I am in pain the sex reduces the pain a lot!! So we just put down a towel on top of the bed. It is okay. Like someone else said please make sure to wash afterwards very very well.

  • I normally don't have sex only because the DH isn't really into it and I always feel like it's too messy. However, if you lay down a towel or do it in the shower it's a pretty clean process. The good news is that sex while on your period can help with cramping :)
  • Having sex while on your period can help with the pain it causes, as it help you relax, I was advised by my GP to have sex often while on my Period and it did help a lot with pain and i wasnt so heavy with my bleeding, she did advise to use a condom when I was on to help stop infections.

It can get messy, it does get messy.. but hey its sex, when isnt sex messy..

    enjoy and good luck

  • We have a few times, but always used the Instead Cup. It keeps the mess to the minimum. The Instead cup is a very soft, thin plastic.

There's enough other fun to have with each other, we just skip it. And, with Mirena I haven't had a period in 5 years. ;)

I didn't know Mirena could stop your periods (although thinking about it that makes way more sense). We talked about switching to that but I've had 2 friends affected by this partial recall with horrible cysts and affecting other parts of their body. One of the girls implanted too deep and they can't find it :-/ I was scared off by that but this thought of no periods for 5 years sounds splendid

  • Nah!

DH really doesn't like the idea and neither do I. I'd rather wait the 5-6 days!

  • I've done it before and I liked it, but my DH hasn't and thinks its gross.  If your partner isnt into it 100% it will just be ackward.  my suggestion is to wear a tampon for foreplay and remove it prior to intercourse....if you arent going to do it in the shower.  To minimize mess put down a towel or have sex in the shower.
  • I don't see anything wrong with it. My fiance and I do all the time. The first time we did, I wasn't too sure about it, but he seemed ok with the idea. So we did and have ever since. It's really not as messy as you would think. We lay a towel down on the bed and we do the regular missionary position with him on top. It also helps out a lot with cramps, which is definitely a plus.
