Alyssa has a cold ... some ?s please ...

So she got this cold a few weeks ago and it went away.  It's back now, accompanied by a cough that started a couple hours ago.  Her nose is runny but it's completely clear.  Her cough doesn't sound congested (yet).  She seems fine otherwise.  I'm going to call the dr. on Monday anyway, but is there anything I should be looking out for and what would be a reason to call the dr. sooner than Monday?  I'm not paranoid at all, but I don't want this to turn into RSV.

Re: Alyssa has a cold ... some ?s please ...

  • There is no reason to call the dr., because there is really nothing they can do for her.  If you don't have one, get a humidifier where you can pour the inhalant in the little cup.  It's really the best thing you can do to ease symptoms, especially if they cause her to wake from coughs or anything like that.  Dry cough, runny nose, no fever?  A cold is a cold, and she'll get through it!  We just had it in our house, and its hard to watch when you can't even blow their little nose, but the warm mist humidifier is magical, I swear.  GL!

  • not to state the obvious, but to actually answer your question keep your eyes peeled for a fever.  Esp. one that doesn't respond to treatment.  Then you should def. call the dr.

  • We do have a humidifer and have had one that we've been using in her room.  She doesn't have a fever right now and the coughing seems to have subsided (I can hear her through the monitor).  I'm still going to call Monday though, if she's still coughing, even if there's nothing they can do.
  • I don't have any suggestions since I'm not a mom yet... I just wanted to say I hope Alyssa is feeling better soon. I'm know babies with colds are not any fun... you just feel so bad for them!
  • It could be post-nasal drip causing her to cough - perhaps try some saline nasal drops to try and clear up her sinuses...oh and baby vick-vapo rub...I used those two things constantly with Austin when he had a headcold
  • It's not going to "turn into" RSV . . . it either is RSV or it isn't. Only a test (nasal swab) at the doctor's office will confirm. Other than just humidifying the room and suctioning her nose, there isn't much else to do. You want to watch for fever, a decrease in her feeding, or labored breathing (watch her chest for retraction . . . if her belly puffs out while the skin under her ribs sinks in, she's working too hard to breath). Particularly with the breathing, if your pedi's office isn't open, head to the ER.

Aidan just came home this evening, after having been in the hospital since Monday for RSV. He had nebulizer treatments every hour for a couple of days (he'ddown to every 6 hours now), plus oxygen, and IV fluids. I'm actually not sure I should have brought him home just yet. He's still having some retraction that concerns me.

I hope Alyssa feels better soon.

  • Sorry she's not feeling so hot - colds can seem to hang on forever sometimes, esp w/the cough. ?Ditto Becky, though, RSV is s virus, so she either has it or she doesn't - it's not just a symptom that can develop or anything. ?Jude was hospitalized with it for 5 weeks, and retraction (which Becky explained) is the biggest thing to look for.?

Many people (Lana is one of them, I think) claim that rubbing Vicks (they have a baby rub) on their feet and putting socks on them stops the coughing. ?It never really made a difference for Jude, but couldn't hurt. ?We also use the humidifier, and either the Triaminic Vapor Fan, or one of the Vicks plug ins.

    'Tis the season!?

  • oops, i meant AT 5 weeks, not FOR 5 weeks. ?haven't had my coffee yet......

  • thanks.  I must have misread when I thought a cold could turn into RSV in babies, so I'm glad to know that it can't.  I did know the trick w/ the Vicks; it never worked for me (if you recall, last winter when I was pregnant and had the ferocious cold, I was desperate to try anything I could!) but if Alyssa's cough doesn't slow down I'll definitely give that a try.  The good news is, she's still stuffy and runny this morning but not coughing very much.

Bex, so sorry to hear about Aidan ... hope the little pumpkin is on the mend ...

  • Yeah, theres not much you can do but keep an eye on her.  If the cough becomes more productive, if its wet or it sounds like she is trying to cough something up, if she gets a fever, if her eating/drinking are effected, or if she becomes lethargic or just not acting right... those are all reasons to call the doctor.  = )   We have a Vicks vaporizer that works wonders!  It makes the whole room smell like Vicks!  You could also try a vapor bath with her.  GL!!  I hope she is feeling better soon!
