NY Marathon- yea or nea?

What do you think about the Mayor Of NY deciding to go

ahead with the marathon? Many people are upset because

they feel the resources needed for the race could be put to

better use. I tend to agree with that.

A family of 4 who lost everything and are staying in a hotel

were told they have to leave because their room is reserved

for one of the runners. I think that sucks, and they can't be the

only ones this will happen to.

Re: NY Marathon- yea or nea?

  • I think it is in bad taste.  I know it is a tradition, etc.  But with so many people who have lost everything - don't have power, water, gas or food this seems like a slap in the face to those affected by the hurricane.
  • I agree that it is bad taste.  The wheels of capitalism (for many business surely planned to make mucho bucks off this event) don't have to be turning at every single second - human compassion should take over here.
  • Heck no. Way too soon. I get they want to get things back to "normal" but there's still too many people without power and displaced for any resources to be "wasted" on the race.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Nay.....if the marathon didn't bring in corporate dollars, there would be no race.  It's disrespectful to the folks who could use the resources that could be directed to them instead of the marathoners.

This really makes my blood boil.

A tipster, who wishes to remain anonymous, told us there were lots of workers in and out of the park today, who had "started before the storm and then came back starting yesterday." Trailers are lined up from around 71st to 66th Streets on Central Park West, a food truck was set up today, and "generators have been sitting there at least a week." The tents that were taken down prior to the storm have also been set back up, and there is a stage set up near 73rd Street.

Considering all the volunteer help and NYPD attention that's already being diverted to the Marathon, the added sight of generators and food being channeled to the event is probably going to strike some New Yorkers as a little misplaced?we're thinking of the ones who are currently lined up waiting for the National Guard to ration out MREs and bottles of water.

  • I think it is completely irresponsible.

To deplete resources from the region and ADD to the gridlock with the number of people coming into the region for the race...sounds like an epic failure waiting to happen.

This turns my stomach. What the ef is wrong with the mayor?

  • No. Not a good idea. PPs all have good ideas for why not.

All those runners ought to put the race aside and pick up shovels beside their country men and start helping with clean-up.

  • It's a horrible idea!!! It's in very poor taste.

I think it should be postponed until further notice.

It should have been cancelled after Hurricane Sandy without a question. What a waste of time they had to even think about this. So glad they cancelled.

  • My sister was supposed to run it.  Obviously she isn't anymore but why the hell did Bloomburg wait until 2 days before the race?  yeah 350 million bucks would have help the city but the city cant accomodate its own residents and is in no condition to take on 47000 more. She is so disappointed, but she would have been just as disappointed in her home state , instead of NJ with my parents, who still don't have power.

Now that I think about it,  while it would have been awesome to run a race in near apocalyptic conditions,  it would have also been a slap in the face to the residents of the 5 boroughs.  The whole thing just blows.  I just hope my sister can find something positive about this huge bubble that just burst in her face.

i get that your sister is disappointed, but as someone from the area hearing you say it would be cool to run there is really kind of sickening. They are still finding bodies in Staten Island ffs. I think something positive for your sister is that she's alive and has a roof over head. There are many here who have neither.

Ultimately I think it's a good thing forNYC and Staten Island specifically that they cancelled that.  And maybe next year when the marathon on it will be a much more positive experience, but this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for my sister and I was so proud of her for attacking her training the way she did.  So yes, my view might be a little myopic for you but that's ok.  I don't take issue with the fact that it got cancelled, but that it got cancelled at the last minute after thousands of people had already showed up because Bloomburg said that it was still on.

It should have been canceled last Sunday.  I agree with you there.
