Do you get a bill in the mail?
We got a bill on our door in April for the first 4 months. I sent a print out of our house settlement stating we were paid up until April. I expected bills to come in, and honestly... totally forgot about it! One board member came around with the trick or treaters with an update on things, we are FINALLY having a meeting this month... and a bill stating I owe for the WHOLE year. Ummm no. It says if you have issues, someone will help you at the meeting. Awesome. Also there's a 5th board member we didn't vote it! WTF!

Re: People with HOAs
We don't get invoices either. They only invoice you if you're late.
Even if you do owe, why would you owe for an entire year if your settlement paid through April? And if you hadn't been paying for whatever reason, why are they just now contacting you?
I wrote this out this morning and my internet went down, and I lost it... let's try this again!
Aleks - yup, ours is 450/year and they wanted to jump it over double until we pay off the management company the builder put us under, and the landscaping they hired. As far as I can tell, they had to take care of snow plowing, but now the county does that, and pay for the street lights and landscaping on the common grounds... we don't have a playground, pool or anything!
I agree that $450 a year is enough! That's crazy that they want to double it. And you're right, just because you aren't friends with them doesn't mean you can't be involved. You own just as much of your neighborhood as they do.
Good luck at your meeting! HOAs can be so irritating!
