Help! My primer is yellowing (Painting wood furniture)

I'm using Zinsser water based primer/sealer on an old china hutch. I've used it before to paint wood furniture, never a problem.

Well this piece has a couple areas where the wood sealer the was originally on it is leaching into the primer I just put on and turning it yellowish or giving it brown marks. I've done three coats and this is getting ridiculous. What can I do? If I have to buy something else this will push me back a full week since today is my getting stuff done day and it's too late to go back out :(

Re: Help! My primer is yellowing (Painting wood furniture)

  • I have a very old house, and had this problem on anything that was stained and I was painting white. I used Kilz Primer and it took 2 or 3 coats. I haven't read any "shortcuts".. it's simply that the stain is so old that it is seeping through. I found that with the Kilz, 2 coats of primer and then 2 coats of the white finish paint was usually enough, though it differed on each thing I painted.

Maybe try doing a light sanding first?

  • Ask someone at the paint store.  You might have to use a non-waterbased primer instead.
