What system do you like better - counting electoral college votes or popular vote? I'm afraid of Romney winning the popular vote and losing the electoral vote. At this point whatever happens happens. It's been a long season.
Counting the popular vote makes more sense to me.
Re: What would you prefer?
I think popular vote is more "fair." As much as I want Obama to win, I wouldn't be happy if he won the electoral but lost the popular.
If it did happen, I think it would be really interesting to compare what partisan pundits said in 2000 to what they say today. Would any of you sing a different tune this time around?
I think the EC made more sense in a day when we were more divided and defined by our state than as a whole country. Granted, some people are still very passionate about their state identity and all that. I've just moved around too much to see it like that, if that makes sense.
So I personally understand the idea of a popular vote a little more, especially given how divided some states are on presidential politics. Though I think it could also be interesting to sort of combine the two and have every state operate like Maine and Nebraska with electoral votes apportioned by district, rather than winner-takes-all, with extra 2 appointed by the state popular tally. That math would probably get even funkier than the current system in some elections, but it'd be interesting to see a detailed breakdown. According to this , Obama took 242 of 435 districts in '08 which is 55% versus his 53% popular vote, so not bad. Conversely, he carried 68% of the electoral votes.
I was all for popular vote because then I think more people feel like their vote would actually count. But if we did that, I think every state should adopt early voting. Looking at what happened this week, if certain areas of the country cannot get out to vote due to natural disaster or other weather issues, it would have much more impact than it does now with the EC (unless, like someone else said, the state affected was a swing state).
Popular vote.
The Electoral College is a complete failure.
Can I just say, Buddy Christ for the win!
