What productive thing(s) are you doing

There are a lot of smart people on this board, more smart ones that left. I'm just curious what productive things you do to make the country better.

I know on the "other" place there are some that are poll workers and very active in their local races.

I'm just looking for ideas on things I can do besides griping on social media and being a snark queen with clever memes to actually help in some productive fashion.

The divisivness that is so prevalent in our country right now I feel like is poison to us all.

I enjoy learning why other people believe what they do and vote the way they do. But the snark is exhausting.

Re: What productive thing(s) are you doing

  • I have very little time to donate outside of my non-profit job (which is a productive employment, imo) and my family.

I donate money and goods to orginaztions such as a local inter-faith group that helps those in need, Remote Area Medical, etc.

This may seems silly but I think raising philanthropic children is also productive to future generations of givers.

  • By day I perform health research, which I think is pretty important.

In my spare time I'm on the board of directors for a local children's group.  Doesn't matter where you fall on the political spectrum, the first 5 years is the most important.

Like Ella said, raising kids is productive.  I'm working hard to raise DS well.  It means making some sacrifices when it comes to work and play, but its worth it.

On the side we make donate old clothing.  I've also been known to give money to St. Jude's and environmental groups.  I also bake treats for an affordable housing group, they use them at their open houses and events.

And just to AW DH, I nominated him to do a TED talk.  Technically he did all the work, but I was the one who nominated him - so there's my productive contribution to education.

That is not silly at all - it is truth! I was raised that way and have continued to donate my time and energy as an adult.  I will raise my child in that manner.

My father was very involved locally (I hate referring to him as politician, but there ya go), and it was just ingrained in me that you give your time and energy to your community free of charge. I was even secretary of the Key Club in high school - and the sole purpose of that club is to donate time, energy and resources to those who need it.

So, I still donate time and money to worthy organizations and people.  In addition to that, I just try to be a good citizen.  Rescue stray dogs, hold doors open for old people, stay and report if I witness an accident - you know what I mean.

I like that. I agree. I think this is a good post.

Hella mentioned that kids getting involved is important. No, Hella, it isn't silly. It's a good idea. You are so correct.

    DH and I:

    1. Operation Christmas Child

    2. We are a big bro and big sis to a young teen boy with the Big Brother/Big Sister Program and have been involved with him for 4 years now.

    3. Door to Hope - is a ministry at our church that supports people and provides resources for folks suffering from job loss, depression, addictions, etc. In its first year - it helped 12 people. In its second, it helped over 300. It's in its 3rd year now and even with the year half over (accounting done in June), it has helped over 600. DH and I serve there with money and also we provide guidance on resume and caver letter writing, and interview prep.

    4. I support my MIL's life ministry, by donation but also by encouragement, idea contribution and proofreading.

  • I volunteer at organizations that help at-risk and homeless youth.  Currently I'm doing my practicum at a low-income school and offering math tutoring afterschool.  Plus I'm getting my teaching certificate to teach at a Title 1 school.

Not at all!  My son's only 9 months, but we plan to teach him about society and how he can help his community.  Both my sister and I are very philanthropic and I hope to instill that in my son, as well.

  • I volunteer at a shelter for victims of domestic violence and rape. I donate and fundraise for various causes that are important to me, I.e. The March of Dimes. I also volunteer for a program that works with children that have downs syndrome and autism.
