  • Yeah, I saw this the other day. Makes perfect sense to me.

Even this dirty commie hippie isn't comfortable with that map and what it implies. I don't want our side sharing this and saying something about those that voted for Romney.

This. It is comparable to those who view all Dems as Socialists.

  • Do y'all think it implies racism? I didn't see it that way. I just take it as those states are slower to accept change.

  • Meaning these areas are unwilling to shift their ideas with the present time. Gay marriage, a woman's right to choose, legalization of marijuana. A lot of changes that were very important to this election, these areas seem to be more stubborn in accepting them.

Sorry I didn't jump to racism, obviously I see that, but I don't think that is all it could mean.

That's actually how i interpreted it as well.  I can see how it would be interpreted the other way, though.

I agree with pp's conservative=racist/liberal=socialist point.  Both are not cool and a major distraction.

  • I may be wrong, but I think Austin and San Antonio are the only ones that could be considered mainly blue. Dallas and Fort Worth, from living in both cities, I cannot imagine could ever be considered liberal. At all.

I have never lived in Houston, nor done any research on this subject, so I'm not sure about that one.

Eta: after googling, Houston does have a democratic mayor.

  • I can't see your map but the one I googled, yes those appear to be the big cities. I'm actually surprised a Dallas area would have swayed blue. Interesting.

  • I guess I could have shown the 2000 election map too which is similar to the 2012.

  • I think people are making this whole election way too race based.

Coming from someone who lives in one of those southern red states, I think it isn't race or slower to accept change. It is more about states rights vs. federal gov't in the area I live. I'm sure that may not be the case for all those red states, but I'm so over the race discussion.

I agree it definitely has to do with states' rights as well. I have a lot of Republican friends and family and know for a fact that none of them are racist so that may also be why I didn't jump to that conclusion.

I'm all for states' rights (exactly why I feel CO and WA can legalize pot all they want) but I DON'T agree when a "state's right" has more importance than an individual's right. I feel like the maps are indicative that certain areas of the country don't feel that that equal rights are as important for everyone whether it was slaves in the 1800's or gays/women/minorities in the 2000's. To me that what is I mean (agreeing with Justaphase) by "slower to accept change".  I know not everyone in those states feels that way, but obviously a majority does.

I can't even read them without feeling ridiculously uncomfortable. I don't understand how ignorant people can be. Disagree with him all you want, that's your right. But those tweets are more than disrespectful. They are disgusting.

  • There have been a lot of studies done that show when you put large populations of rats in small areas they go a little crazy (or a lot crazy).

I think that is a good explanation of why heavily populated areas tend to be blue.

  • So liberal equals crazy now?

    Good to know.

Yep, I bet all of those tweets came from New York City and Boston and Seattle.

Actually, this election Dallas county, Harris county (Houston), and Travis county (Austin) were all blue.  The rest of the state, aside from some border counties were red.  I looked at the map not as racist but as areas that have a higher religious involvement.  I live in Dallas and am a blue dot in a red ocean.  The majority of the problem in the Republicans I've encountered in the south is the idea that Republican = Christian and they think it's the only option they have as a Christian.  They are reluctant to do anything that might question their religion so they blindly follow based on social issues i.e. anti-gay marriage, abortion.  Just as they are with their religion, they are with their politics; they don't ask questions and blindly follow.

Houston is more liberal in that they have an openly gay mayor which is something that I never thought I would see outside of Austin.  Where I wouldn't consider Harris and Dallas county as liberal, they have definitely come along way and think with the current Republican problem of being so racially exclusive, I think we will continue to see more and more blue dots in this red ocean.
