how much time do you take off at Thanksgiving/Christmas/Holidays?
There's a chart up in DD's class at preschool asking what days each kid will be out in November & December. I'm always a little baffled by this b/c we rarely miss much school or work time @ the holidays. Maybe the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and 1-2 day around Christmas - max. I've never worked anywhere that shut down for the holidays and gave everyone a week off - and I honestly don't know anyone that has a week off except teachers. We never traveled at the holiday when I was a kid b/c we were broke and my parents didn't have enough money for us to go somehere and be off from their jobs.
Re: how much time do you take off at Thanksgiving/Christmas/Holidays?
For Thanksgiving, I have a five day weekend (Wed-Sun).
For Christmas/New Years, I will have 11 days off in a row and only have to take 3 days off.
I'm sure my DH will only have Thanksgiving day, Christmas day and New Years day off.
I get Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day (plus half days on the Eves) as holidays at work. I turn the half days into full days off and I take off Black Friday, but that's it. I never have enough vacation time saved to take more than that.
DS's daycare is closed the week between Christmas and New Years. The days where we'll be at work, he will go to my parents' house or DH's parents' house.
Growing up, we never traveled over the holidays and my parents took us out of school for a vacation ONCE and that was only one day (the last day of 8th grade, which actually sucked that I missed it!).

We have Wednesday, Thurs and Friday off for Thanksgiving; I'm taking Monday and Tuesday because DH and I are going to Arizona to celebrate with my family this year.
Christmas falls on a Tuesday this year. I think we have Monday-Wednesday off. But if I had the vacation time and wanted to take extra days, it would be fine. We don't shut down entirely, but we're not on such pressing deadlines that I can't miss some time for the holiday.

For Thanksgiving, I have to work Wednesday and I'm coming in the day after to work as well. It's usually so quiet that I can get a lot done during that time.
For the Christmas/New Years I'm taking the day before Christmas off. DH has the week of Christmas off because it's a furlong week.
My Daycare is closed Thanksgiving and the day after. She's also closed the week of Christmas too!
I may take a few extra days off after Christmas, but for now, I'm just working the days after.
I work 4 10-hr days and I'm usually off on Monday's but I can switch.
I'm going to switch my day Thanksgiving week to be off Black Friday.
I'm hoping we get off Christmas Eve. If so, that will move my day off to Wednesday (since we are closed on Christmas) and I might take Thursday off too. If we don't get that day off, I'll just take off Wednesday.
I've always worked with a lot of people who took vacation time for the week between Christmas and New Year's, whether they had kids or not. And if you have children in school, school is shut down, and finding other places to send them while you continue to work can be a challenge. Instead, some parents just take the time themselves and enjoy an extended holiday.
Also, when we used in-home daycares when Mia was little, they were always closed the week between Christmas and New Year's.
I'll have off the day before, day after, and day of Thanksgiving. Mia has a half day Wednesday and is off Thursday and Friday.
I'll have off Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day. But I'm going to take off an additional three work days between the two holidays. With weekends I'll be off of work a total of 11 days. Mia's school has a half day 12/21 and is off until 1/2.
Once October hits when you work for the gov't, the end of the year flies by because it's holiday central and it's like we're off every other day! That's defininitely a perk...but on the downside, it's also a busy time because we have our Union's Open Enrollment period. So in a sense it's hard to be off beause there's so much going on.
We were closed Tuesday for the election, we're off Monday for Veteran's Day and then Thanksgiving and the day after. The rest of the State gets the day before too but since we're a 24/7 agency...and they make up for it by giving us an additional P/L day. It's quiet though and I don't mind coming in because I can get a lot done. We also have Christmas Eve and Christmas day off.
Aside from that, I generally wouldn't be taking time off because I just don't really have the need to. However, I have personal leave that is use or lose so I'll be squeezing 2 days off to burn that up before the end of the year. I just haven't scheduled it yet.
I get thanksgiving and black friday off, and then christmas day and new years day.
DH's company shuts down the last week of the year.
For Thanksgiving, I am given off Thursday and Friday.
For Christmas/Winter Break, I am given off this year from December 24 through January 1. It's awesome but also something that I was used to from school. Technically as of December, I am will be working for my second biopharm company and both of them have this time off. DH normally took off all of this time too because we like having the long break together.
This is me too!
Holidays at my work in Nov/Dec/January include:
These particular Holidays fall around the rare time of year that I'm not completely overwhelmed with work so I usually take a few extra days off around the Holidays. I also usually have leave I have to burn by then or lose it. This year I'm off the Tues/Weds before Thanksgiving and the three days following Xmas.
If a holiday falls on our schedules day of work, we have to work. I'm not senior enough to hold any vacation days during the holidays.
Im 8-4:30 on Thanksgiving and 2:30- 11 on Christmas. I'm off Christmas Eve though, which is nice.
Since we don't get holidays off, we have one paid day off each month to give us a three day weekend.
I have a half day the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and then Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday off.
For Christmas I am off from Dec 22-Jan 1.

My current job
Thanksgiving
I have off Thursday and Friday. Sometimes I take Wednesday off, or try to work from home because of how bad traffic is. One year it took me 2.5 hours to get home.
Christmas
This year we have off from the 24th to the 2nd. I work in a University and instead of getting Presidents' Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, etc. We get it all off at once. My office actually closes because I work at a university. I know that this is not the case will all universities. I have worked at other places (and universities) that have not done this.
Growing up my mom, who was a teacher, was always off Thurs, Fri, Mon for T-Day (Monday is the first day of deer season in PA, so schools were closed) and she had a week off at Xmas.
I will still be on FMLA leave over Thanksgiving, but if I were working, I would have to work the Sunday before Thanksgiving so that our patients could be treated for 4 days that week and then have a 4 day weekend and I'd be off Thanksgiving and Black Friday. We don't typically work weekends at all but most everyone is happy to come in on the weekend before in order to get 4 days off.
I hate that Christmas and New Year's are on Tuesdays this year, it works out so much better when they fall on weekends or Fridays/Mondays! I am taking Christmas Eve off this year, but its not a holiday for my company. I will work New Year's Eve and then obviously we're closed Christmas day and New Year's day.
My office is closed half day on Wednesday before Thanksgiving and then Thursday and Friday. I am visiting family so I will take off Monday, Tuesday and half of Wednesday and then the following Monday and Tuesday.
For Christmas we are closed the entire week between Christmas and New Years. I work for a college and like PP we don't have off for most federal holidays except the 4th of July and a few others, they save them and give us a nice long Christmas break. I like this especially since Kieran's daycare is closed that week as well.
For Thanksgiving I have off Thursday-Sunday
For Christmas I have off Christmas Eve through January 3 I believe. In the future, DS will have to be at pre-school no matter what. Taking off for me is a pain in the butt.
