Newbie Here

Hi,

So I have been married less than a month and I have never liked my husbands dogs & now I am living with them. I actually like dogs but his are wild and don't listen. I told him that if he was going to have the dogs in the house that he would have to keep them clean. They have not had a bath in a month, they are two full grown pit bulls, dog hair is everywhere (yes I vacuum but now Im like what's the point, and even worse the dog smell is getting stronger) I don't bathe them b/c they are huge, & they have never had shots. How do I make him understand where im coming from without starting a fight because any time I say something he gets upset about it & says he will handle it but never does.

Re: Newbie Here

  • Seriously? He has two dogs and has never taken them to the vet to get shots?

  • Nope, & I really don't know what his purpose for having them is. He works all the time and we can't leave them out as guard dogs b/c they jump all over the furniture and forget they are house broken.

  • You didn't explain in your post "where you're coming from". What is it that you want?

It's very common for dogs not to be bathed that often. My dogs get a bath once a season, unless they get muddy.

Since you guys are married, they're now your dogs, too. Find a vet or a low-cost vaccine clinic and take them. Find a groomer and have them bathed. Sign them up for an obedience class. That last one will also help you bond with them.

    This.

Also, it might help you get somewhere with your husband if you try to like the dogs and accepted them as yours. The more you fuss about "his" dogs and what "he" needs to do with "his" dogs, the more he will get defensive and less likely to listen to you.

  • Ditto PP.  Also if they are stinky, it could be from the food they are eating.  Low quality food (pretty much anything sold in a grocery store), can cause some serious stank.  If they have never had shots, I'm guessing they are also not fixed.  That needs to happen as well.

The fact that it seems they have not been trained, is the big problem.  Consider a training class with you and one of the dogs.  That would help with bonding to them and you and getting behavior under control.  Of course to do that, they would need to have vet care first.

Baths don't happen very often at all in our house.  Maybe a few times a year since they are short-haired and don't really get muddy.

  • I have exactly the opposite problem. I am newly married, 11 days actually, and my husband does not get along with my dog. She is a rescue and is afraid of men. She LOVES me and follows me every step I take and always want to be in my lap. She is a Doxie and Pom mix. She is my baby. She gets scared when hes around and it makes her cower and urinate. He gets mad and always calls her YOUR dog which hurts my feelings. He knew I came with her and he has a cat that sleeps with us everynight who I love. From someone on this side of the dog ownership, my advice is to try and learn to love them and give it sometime. All dogs are good at heart and just need to be worked with. When discussing the issue don't use words like YOURS or MINE because now that you are married everything that was yours and mine became ours. :)
