Diwali

DH and I are going to our first Diwali dinner party. I know the premise of the holiday and all, but not sure what is customary. Do people exchange gifts or cards or sweets? I am also debating wearing my sari as it will be cold. Anyone who celebrates and has some insight, it would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

Re: Diwali

  • from what I have heard from my bestie who happens to be east indian....take cash in small bills. As far as wearing a sari...if you are east indian I would have expected you to..if you are not/married into the culture, I wouldn't expect you to. I have gone to numerous east indian events including going to the sihk temple and dont have a sari, no one has ever expected me to wear one or been offended since I am not from that culture, so I think its really up to if you want to wear a sari or not.
  • First off, sorry for late reply, but if you are not comfortable wearing sari then it is not mandatory in their culture, there are other East Indian costumes available for you rather than sari.
