So H and I are looking for a new couch and we fell in love with a sectional in a "mintyish" green color. It's the only way I can describe it, but it's defiantly my favorite shade of green kind of a light contemporary color green. The couch comes with green and purple patterned pillows (stripes and a very modern floral pattern, I hate floral so it's defiantly on the modern side for me to like it). We are getting an ottoman in the stripe pattern. My living room now is mostly brown tones with some green/blue accents. I'll need to get a new rug and curtains, but my favorite large painting in my living room is a huge painting with mostly various shades of brown. I defiantly don't want to get rid of it. Would you pair that with a green couch? What color rug would you do? I thought about a patterned rug with brown, purple, and green shades, but I think I'm going to have to go with a solid rug so it doesn't clash with the patterned pillows and ottoman. Would you do Purple? Orange? Brown? What about curtains? Our curtains now are a different shade of green with brown patterns so that isn't going to work. I think I'm going to have to get the couch in here to really decide, but thought I'd ask your opinions! I struggle with lots of color in decorating since I usually stick to earth tones. A lot of our furniture is an antique/distressed black so I think that will still be ok, right? Help! I may come back and upload pictures once we get the couch in here, but what are your thoughts?
Edited to add our walls are a beige, if that helps!
Re: Decortating Question
Well, without photos it IS kind of hard to say, but here's my thoughts:
1.) If you want to see how a color palette will look, or look for a color palette to go with a certain item (your "minty" couch, this is a great website: http://design-seeds.com
2.) If you are building on your minty green couch w/ matching purple accents, I think brown would look nice with those colors so that the painting you like should be fine to keep there. (And if you don't really like it, you could always move it to a different room!)
3.) Are you going to put the ottoman on top of the rug? If so, I'd keep away from colored patterns. You could still do a pattern in a single color, but I would keep it real simple because it sounds to me with a green/purple stripey floral pattern things could get out of hand quickly, like you said. Depending on how much purple is in the pattern, I might try and match the purple in the pattern. Or if that is too much color for you, I think a brown carpet would tie in nicely with the picture on the wall you like.
4.) I'd say the same thing as 3.) in regards to the curtains - I'd keep it a single color with no pattern. Less is more, in my opinion.
5.) With regards to the furniture - I guess if you have a lot of furniture pieces and all of them are black, I might skip brown as an accent color. I know they say you can wear black and brown together now, but I still don't like them together in a room.
Pictures (even a stock photo!) would really help!
First we have light sage green walls and blue walls (2 mellow shades) with a brown couch, purple small couch, and a futon that has red, sage green, a little blue and browns in it.
We found pillows for the brown couch (H's) that are a floral pattern that brings in the blue and adds red. Our other throw pillows are reds/blues. While it sounds like a lot we have a large living room and it really works over the space. Our throw pillows tie all the pieces together. We added some white pieces to balance out all the wood and it works. We have a beige carpet though so it balances the color on the furniture.
Second... if you want to show your friends things you are trying I just discovered Referly which is awesome for putting collections together if you can find the pictures on the internet...
You can see the pillows I'm talking about at my Budget Redecorating collection http://refer.ly/p/sierrapoint (please note I'll be editing out my link later this week since it connects to my real name)
Check out Referly for creating one place to link to things you like- I'm entertained by it today.
Good luck
