States Petition to Secede from the Union

Anyone else heard about this? Thoughts? Is this constitutionally possible?

Re: States Petition to Secede from the Union

  • 1.  It's small groups of people within each state, not the state government.

    2.  If they want to secede, let them.  It worked out so well for them the last time they seceded.

  • IIRC, it actually is possible, at least in Texas. I'm not sure about other states. Being a Texan myself with many Republican Texan "friends" I have seen this all over Facebook. It's dumb. It will never happen. And if it did, there would be complete and utter chaos.

  • My mother and I were discussing this on the phone tonight. My solution was for those states to hang tight, remain the USA, and just have Canada annex the rest. That way, all the liberals don't have to move to Canada, and all the conservatives don't have to move to Texas. It'll all work out in the end.

  • Y'know what, though - kudos to them for finally figuring out that Canada is not more conservative than the US.  They deserve one big collective cookie.

May I steal this, as well??? justAphase, I am so glad I found someone like you.  I'm a liberal texan and I HATE all the people like this that speak for everyone in the state!!  They just make us all look ignorant.

  • I gotta be honest.  I wouldn't mind if Texas seceded. Then We could just invade, nation build, and install a democratic government.  Winning!
  • They can succeed and take their text book buying power with them.  No biggie.

But honestly, you would think this is the first election that didn't go people's way.

  • What has Texas ever done for us anyway?

This is a pretty common misconception. Our state constitution has no provision for secession, it only says that we are only bound to the Constitution of the United States (not the President or Congress or anything else). Most everyone in Texas believes we have the ability to secede whenever we want, but we can only do that if other world leaders recognize us as an independent nation, including the POTUS. We have no more right to secede than any other state.

  • If Texas were to secede, I feel it would only be fair that El Paso be left to New Mexico. No reason it should go down with the rest of the state (except Austin, apparently), I quite liked my time living there.

  • Texas's secession would remove a big red state from the electoral map, pretty much guaranteeing that Democrats retain control of the White House for the forseeable future.  So it would have that benefit for the U.S., but the poor Texans -- Rick Perry as a head of state is a scary thought.
  • But more importantly, what would happen to America's Team the Dallas Cowboys?  Crying
