Pet-sitter recs?

Hi Ladies,

First I would like to introduce myself.  My name is April and I am a newlywed (been married about 2 months now!).  I'm also new to Pittsburgh, having just moved here to be with my husband.  :-)

I just realized today that since I moved I no longer have my usual pet-sitter available to watch our 2 cats over the holidays.  I figured the drive from Texas to Pittsburgh would be too much of a commute for her!  Needless to say, I am wondering if any one on here could recommend a good pet-sitter for two well-mannered cats.  I know it's last minute notice, but it would be great if they had Thanksgiving availability.  Also, I live on the north end of Pittsburgh (not the scary bit), if that helps.

 Thanks in advance!

-April

Re: Pet-sitter recs?

  • Hi, and welcome to the city (and board!).  I generally just have family watch my pups when we go out of town, but I assume that is a luxury that you may not have just yet. Are there any responsible neighborhood children around to go over and feed/visit the cats once or twice a day while you are gone?  Another suggestion is to call a local vet to see if they have any recommendations for in home care.  There are a lot of decent boarding places around the area as well.  I am sure others will be able to recommend!
  • Unfortunately, I don't have any family or friends here. Also, the only kid we have near us is 2 years old. I'll look into calling the local vet. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks :-)
  • I don't have any suggestions, but I just wanted to say hi & welcome to the board! :)  I hope you're able to find a sitter.

  • are you open to kennels?  Not sure where you are in the north, but when we have to, we board our dogs at "The Kennel" off of Mt Nebo Rd.  They are very nice there and reasonably priced.

  • What about calling Animal Friends? They're off Camp Horne Road and I bet they have a lot of volunteers or even staff who pet sit, or know of someone?

Let me know if you still can't come up with someone. I used to work with a lady who did it on the side (and lives around the bottom of McKnight Rd, Ross Twp area). I don't have her number but can get it through a friend if needed.

    Good luck!

  • Hi egpitt22,

     Thanks for the welcome!

  • Thanks for all the help!  I don't like using kennels for cats, and the one time I did my cats contracted ringworm.  So, if possible I like to keep them in their home, especially since it is upsetting enough that we are gone.

I tried calling the local vet offices and a couple of them recommended Fetch, so I'm pursuing that avenue right now.  Hopefully that pans out!  I've always had either friends or family where I live, so not having them has been a new experience!

I really appreciate all the suggestions, though. :-)
