Beginning weight-loss together, any tips?

Hubby and I are both overweight, and we both want to start exercising more, together.  Does anyone have any tips for beginner-type of things together?  We're going to try to walk around our neighborhood every night together, but there are no gyms to join in our area within 10 miles or so (that's a 20-minute drive where we live).  Any ideas are welcome!

  • Hi there! Good for you, making that decision :) and working out together makes it SO much easier. Walking is good, and there are a ton of awesome work out videos out there. My husband and i just started p90x, which is super tough, but we are beginners too and we can follow along just fine. You can also jump rope, jog, really anything that gets your heart rate up

  • Thanks!  I actually really like Leslie Sansone's walking video (it's called walking like a runner or something), because I like doing 1 mile then thinking, I have another ten minutes, I can do another.  DH doesn't like videos, though, which is a problem.  He feels "stupid" doing them... I thought about buying us p90x, but it's expensive and I want us to get a little more in shape before we tackle something like that!
  • my DH doesn't normally like videos either, i think he thinks they are only for women. It was his idea to do the p90x, and we didn't have to pay for it.(my BIL had it). walking is really good for you

  • That's so great that you're exercising together. My husband and I decided we needed to be healthier and we've both lost 15-20% of our body weight. We initially started by joining a gym together so we could run, but it's not necessary. You can start by taking longer walks, then doing intervals (run 1 min, walk 1 min) building up the run lengths until you reach 30 minutes. I also do the 30 day shred at home if I don't want to go outside.

I highly recommend signing up for an event together. My hubby and I run the Disneyland 1/2 marathon together every year and I really love that it's something we work towards together. We both know that he can run a lot faster than I can, but training and running together is what gets us through. It's all about the support and motivation. At the beginning, there were definitely times when one of us tried to flake out on going on a run, but the other person was great motivation. I can't even begin to describe the feeling crossing that finish line next to my husband, thinking "we did this... together." I promise it's worth it. :)

  • If there aren't any gyms in your area, could you take a fitness class together somewhere closer? My husband and I do karate together twice a week (we've both been doing it for over a decade, it's how we met :) ). It's an activity that we both love, so it doesn't seem like work.

Depending on where you live, I would consider joining the gym despite the commute. We go to a gym with tennis courts, racketball, basketball courts, etc. We like to go play games together (usually squash or basketball). It's way more fun than going to a gym to do cardio machines/ lift weights, so we're much more likely to go. I would recommend this ESPECIALLY if you're like me and live in a place with harsh winters- running outside is pretty much out-of-the-question 6 months of the year.

  • If you're like me and dislike exercise without a purpose (as in, I hate running on a treadmill to nowhere), look into social sports in your area. Many towns have adult sports leagues for more than just softball.

Otherwise, the outdoors is the best place to get exercise. Walking is fantastic exercise, but you will have to work on your eating habits to really loose weight and keep it off. Sparkpeople.com is a great free online tool to get a diet and exercise program as well as a great community to keep you motivated. If you both join, you can create a team and see each other's progress. I love their recipe database.

    Good luck!
