What am I missing? I'm not at all trying to be snarky, but I am confused as to why you are so shocked.

There are people doing extremely stupid things, for extremely stupid reasons, literally every single second of every day.  I'm not sure if it has been this way since the beginning of time, but it sure seems like it.

This very second, as I type this, some dumbasss is out there somewhere doing something stupid because of a ridiculous, incomprehensible reason.

    It is what it is.

  • Also, that headline should read, "Man kills self because he is depressed and mentally ill."  No one kills themselves over a presidential election if they aren't already fvucked up.

    Exactly.

The Huffington Post reported that empty prescription bottles were also found, one of which was Seroquel -- a drug used to treat bipolar disorder, depression and schizophrenia.

So, yeah this man obviously has underlying mental issues.

Maybe those 50 should secede and form a more perfect union together?

Regarding the news story:  sad, that person was clearly disturbed.

I guess I have been avoiding the news and news stories online for the last week and the 1 day I try and catch up on stuff I see all these things.   I just don't understand why politics affects people so much in such a negative way

These people are crazy.  If politics didn't set them off then something else would have.  Cases of domestic violence also increase after sports teams lose, violence spikes during heat waves, there's always a catalyst - right now it just happens to be politics.

These cases are getting more attention than those other things because the presidential election is one of the few things that the entire country has in common and most have an opinion about.

  • It's not dumb or stupid. The man was schizophrenic and probably depressed too. He killed himself because he had untreated, or ineffectively treated, mental illness. It's sad and awful. And things like this should prompt questioning about the state of mental healthcare in this country (like the Aurora shooting) but it rarely does. Because frankly, most Americans don't give a sh!t about the mentally ill, and they definitely don't if it means they might have to sacrifice ten cents a year in tax dollars to help them.

Very well said.  I agree and the sad thing is a lot of people who have been diagnosed with a mental illness can lead perfectly productive, happy lives - if they are receiving the proper care.
